OVERVIEW

Odontostomatology is the branch of Medicine dealing with dental and oral diseases.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Cognitive learning of the main diseases of dental interest. The student must be able to recognize the physiopathological bases and the clinical manifestations of the main diseases and their complications. In addition, he will have to be able to establish a diagnostic procedure and prognosis.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will:

  • Know the principles of dental anatomy, the deciduous and permanent dentition, and the main pathologies of the oral cavity.
  • Know the main types of therapy and rehabilitation of dental relevance
  • Be able to address a patient to a dental consulting in case of need
  • Be able to clinically recognize the controindications to oral surgery
  • Know the correlations between systemic disease and oral cavity

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists in 10 hours (1 CFU) of formative activities held trough frontal theorical lessons. Lessons could be held in remote mode

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • Principles of dental anatomy
  • Deciduous and permanent dentition
  • Main dental malformations
  • Anatomic structures at risk in dental surgery
  • Principles of restorative dentistry, oral surgery, prosthodontic rehabilitation
  • Classification of various types of dental prostheses
  • Basic knowledge of etiology, pathogenesis and therapy of dental caries and periodontal disease
  • Correlations between systemic diseases and oral cavity
  • Local and systemic contraindications to oral surgery
  • Tooth extraction and its complications

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written test with multiple choice questions and possible oral discussion.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The verification of learning takes place through the only final exam that aims to ensure the effective acquisition of the expected learning outcomes by the student.

Details about the exam preparation procedures and the degree of deepening will be given during the lessons.

The exam will focus mainly on the topics covered during frontal lessons and will aim to assess not only if the student has reached an appropriate level of knowledge, but also if he is able to critically interpret clinical situations that could be presented during the exam.

The student will also have to demonstrate to have the ability to describe odontostomatologic diseases and therapies in a clear way and adopting an appropriate terminology.
