AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Knowledge of the major diseases of professional interest in their social and preventive aspects. Prevention, protection and health in work environments. General concepts of industrial hygiene and occupational toxicology. The role and tasks of the competent medical practitioner. Overview of major occupational diseases, work-related illnesses and work-related injuries. Radiation safety concepts. Legislation and activities related to work hygiene, health surveillance of workers and the privileged protection of occupational diseases. At the end of the lessons the student will be able to know and understand the legislative elements on prevention and safety in the workplace. They will be able to know, understand and apply procedures in the field of prevention and health protection against specific risks of professional cause, with positive implications also in the practice of professionalising internship. TEACHING METHODS Lectures in plenary hall SYLLABUS/CONTENT Introduction to Occupational Medicine: definition, workfield, Evidence Based Occupational Health and occupational perspectives. Risk assessment, safety and prevention in the workplace and health surveillance of workers. Prevention of biological risk in the workfield: measures - personal protective equipment (PPE) and vaccinations. Management of biological injuries with parenteral pathogens in the workfield. Gender medicine in the workfield: pregnancy and work. Professional pneumothorax. Professional tumors: definition, clinical and diagnostic. Laboratory of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Toxicology: from the monitoring of the workplace to the biological workplace of workers at work-related risk. Diseases from physical agents: noise hypoacusia and technopathy from vibrating instruments. Ionizing and non-ionizing radiations, electromagnetic fields and artificial optical radiation. Diseases from chemical agents: organic compounds and heavy metals. Professional dermatitis. Principles of ergonomics, microclimate and work at the video terminal. Night work, related stress work and violence at workplaces. Cardiopathy, diabetes and work. Biomechanical overload pathologies: low back pain, lumbar vertebral pathology and upper limbs. Lifestyles in the current work environment: smoking, nutrition, alcohol, narcotics, sleeping hygiene (eg, OSAS). Accidents and occupational diseases. The student will have to answer, in a short and exhaustive manner, in a maximum of 45 minutes, to three open-question exercises. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam is developed with the aim of assessing the cognitive learning of basic knowledge about current regulations in the work environment, with the distinction between obligations and rights of the various people involved, and those specific to occupational hazards and related occupational diseases.
