LEARNING OUTCOMES

This is an introductory course to methods and technologies for helping people with disabilities to regain lost cognitive, sensory and/or motor functions. The course is intended to provide the basic knowledge behind technological solutions(i) to evaluate and monitor the impairment, (ii) to assist individuals with disabilities (iii) to promote the recovery of the missing limbs and/or lost functions. The course aims to provide an overview of the most advanced techniques of functional assessment, prosthetics, sensory substitution, neurorehabilitation and assistive technologies.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This is an introductory course to methods and technologies for helping people with disabilities to regain lost cognitive, sensory and motor functions. The course is intended to provide the basic knowledge behind technological solutions (i) to evaluate and monitor the impairment, (ii) to assist individuals with disabilities, and  (iii) to promote the recovery of missing limbs or lost functions. The course aims to provide an overview of the most advanced techniques for functional assessment, prosthetics, sensory substitution, neurorehabilitation and assistive technologies

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

-       Develop the analytical and experimental skills necessary to design and implement methods and technologies (i) to help people with disabilities regain lost cognitive, sensory and/or motor functions; (ii) to evaluate the loos of cognitive, sensory and/or motor functions and their evolution with time or their change due to treatment.

-    Be familiar with the state of the art of rehabilitation engineering both in the clinical practice and in research

-   Know basic concepts of kinematics, dynamics, and control relevant to rehabilitation engineering

-   Know the state of the art and the basic concepts related to prostheses (for missing limb replacement)

PREREQUISITES

Basis of

> Biomechanics

> Signal processing

TEACHING METHODS

The course aims at reaching an appropriate balance between basic notions and applications.

Students in addition to being involved in lectures (from the teacher) and discussions with invited experts for specific topics of the course, are requested to engage different activities, including software development, lecturing and/or developing research projects, both individually and as teams.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

This is an introductory course to methods and technologies to help people with disabilities to regain lost cognitive, sensory and/or motor functions.
The course is intended to provide the basic knowledge behind   technological solutions
(i) to evaluate and monitor the impairment, (ii) to assist individuals with disabilities (iii) to promote the recovery of  the lost functions.

The first part of the course aims at providing an overview of the most advanced techniques on functional evaluation, prosthetics, sensory substitution, neuro-rehabilitation and assistive technologies.

The second part is devoted to in-depth analysis of the specific applications of the above mentioned methods and technologies to people suffering from neurological diseases such as Multiple sclerosis, Stroke, Parkinson or Spinal cord injury, sensory impairments (sensory substitution), cognitive impairments, motor deficits in infants and in the elderly population.

Topics covered:  Rehabilitation engineering is a multidisciplinary subject, with elements from neurology, biomechanics, and robotics. The course will aim at providing an overview of the most advanced techniques for sensorymotor assessment, prosthetics, sensory substitution, neuro-rehabilitation and assistive technologies for individuals with a loss on cognitive, sensory and/or motor functions.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Materials and  readings will be distributed via the course website. The class will review specialized articles recently pubblished on international journal

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Students will be evaluated based on

a) Assignements  / project in which the students will analyze  data from people affected by a disability or related to rehabiltation techonologies

Their active participation to  the course, where students are request to present research articles on specific applications and/or discuss with invited speakers (experts in the field).

c) Final exam

a and b are ongoing assessments (continous evaluations), while c is at the end of the course. Also for students not attending classes a and b precede the final exam (b can be part of the exam itself).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment methods here refers to the exams description above.

a) The assigments  aim at evaluating the ability to understand, explain and solve problems related to Rehabilitation Engineering topics

b) The active participation part aims at evaluating the ability to learn, deepen and explain Rehabilitation Engineering topics

c) The final exam aims at assessing that the course contents have been assimilated, that the student knows how to use them critically and explain them appropriately.

In addition to the knowledge of the course contents, the quality of the presentation, the correct use of the specialized vocabulary, the ability to reason critically and to apply the acquired knowledge  will be assessed
