OVERVIEW

The purpose of this course is first to provide an overview of the scientific activities performed within the department, related to the research field of engineering for personalized medicine. Secondly, the students will be offered an internship in a lab of their choice, where they will learn to conduct a research project and evaluate new scientific/technical problems and questions. This ‘training through research’ approach will allow them to acquire new skills and techniques, which can be exploited for analyzing, evaluating and solving specific problems arising in a research Lab.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Lab internship, focusing on learning specific skills pertinent to the track of choice, and on working on an individual project.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aim1. Describe the engineering for personalized medicine-related scientific activities available in the department. Thanks to presentations from the bioengineering teaching staff of the department, an overview of the available Lab activities will be provided to the students. Learning outcome for Aim 1. The students will acquire a general knowledge about the main research lines available in the department. Reference to the state of the art will be always provided, to allow the students to contextualize the proposed research activities within the national and international panorama. We expect the students to improve their critical thinking and transfer their knowledge in different research settings.

Aim2. Evaluate and solve a engineering for personalized medicine problem and/or respond to a technical and scientific question in a real lab environment. By following a ‘training through research’ approach, the students will be exposed to real scientific/technical problems, presented in the form of individual projects. Learning outcome for Aim 2. The students will perform an internship in a lab of their choices to conduct an individual research project in the framework of the engineering for personalized medicine field. The internship will be focused on learning specific techniques relevant to the path of choice, carrying out an individual project and solve the proposed questions.

Common Learning outcomes:

-Capability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, adaptation of one's communication to the context, use of various sources and aids, critical thinking, ability to use, process and evaluate information, argumentative skills.

-Ability to manage one's social interactions, cooperative attitude, constructive communication in different environments, ability to respect others and their needs, willingness to overcome prejudices, express and understand different points of view, conflict management, ability to build trust, empathy.

-Ability to develop one's imagination and creativity, critical reflection, thinking strategy, problem solving with particular reference to contexts of innovation and processes evolving creativity, ability to transform ideas into action, self-awareness

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists in the presentation of the performed project, in the form of a ppt presentation (or similar format). The presentation will be given by the student at the presence of the course teacher and the Lab head and of all the other interested students.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The work performed in the hosting lab and the final presentation of the conducted project will allow to evaluate the achievements of Aim1 and Aim2. More specifically, we expect the student will demonstrate knowledge of the research topic, acquisition of new skills/expertise, independence, proactivity, critical thinking, contextualization of the work within the research community.

Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account the modalities of individual learning and provide suitable tools
compensatory.
