The course aims at providing an overview about the environmental impact of coastal infrastructures examining the regulations issued both at the national and international level. Further, the course deals with the technical-engineering aspects of the hydraulic infrastructures in coastal areas, the flood risk of inland transport infrastructures and the role of the main technical-engineering solutions to mitigate the risk.
The course aims at providing an overview about the environmental impact of costal infrastructures for transport logistics, and production (e.g., seaports) examining the regulations issued both at national and international level. Further, the course deals with the technical-engineering aspects of the hydraulic infrastructures in coastal areas.
The course is organized in four main subsections. After attending the course students will be able to describe and recognize the main aspects of the environmental management of water discharges in coastal infrastructures, including sewage and storm water discharges, as well as the impact of oil spills during ship operations and in case of accidents. They will be able to use the international and national guidelines and regulations. They will be able to design the structure of the drainage network and the hydraulic devices related to the management of wash-off discharges and accidental discharges. They will be able to describe and recognize the main aspects of the sustainable management of water resources/discharges within the coastal infrastructures according to the “zero discharge” approach in order to reduce the impact of commercial/industrial areas on the receiving water bodies, mainly focusing on the coastal areas. They will be able to describe and recognize the main aspects of the flood risk concerning the interruptions of inland transport infrastructures and the related mitigation solutions.
Students will be able to critically re-elaborate and use the knowledge acquired in one of the four main topics described above, chosen for the group work.
Students will develop the capability of managing their social interactions with a collaborative attitude and adopting constructive communication processes. They will develop decision-making autonomy, a collaborative attitude, the ability to manage information and materials, to negotiate solutions and to treat the uncertainties.
The lectures are organized in about 45 hours of theory in order to deal with applied problems on the main topics of the course and intermediate wooclap interactive experiences to verify the level of learning.
Part of the course will be organised by dividing students in groups (2/3 students), in order to deepen one of the environmental issues presented during the lesson hours. Before the end of the semester students will be asked to propose the subject and the outline of the presentation that must be approved by the teachers. Results will be presented in the form of a technical report and discussed during the exam.
Working students and students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA), disability or other certification of special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual ways of learning.

The exam consists in a presentation of the group work and a discussion of the subject selected for the presentation (and eventually strictly related subjects). The report must be uploaded on the TEAMS class section (presentation) 10 days before the exam date. The discussion of the group work must obtain a grade larger than 18/30 to access the written exam, consisting in a written close ended questions test on the remaining contents of the course.
Students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA), disability or other certifications of special educational needs will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.
During the oral presentation and discussion, the planning and technical skills acquired by the student during the course and during the group work will be evaluated. The interaction with other students within the group will be also considered. Students must demonstrate the ability to synthesise and illustrate the concepts, as well as the ability to critically re-elaborate and effectively use the knowledge acquired.
The written close ended questions test will be evaluated based on the number of correct answers and the score associated to each question.
