CODE 66163 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 3 INGEGNERIA MECCANICA 8784 (L-9) - LA SPEZIA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/08 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION LA SPEZIA SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW This course aims at providing a comprehensive overview on the main categories of Fluid Machines and on their operating principles. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES This course aims at providing the fundamental working principles about fluid machinery, for both Power-producing and Power-adsorbing machines and for compressible and non-compressible fluids. Moreover, skills about the selection criteria, based on usage and on operative range, will be developed. PREREQUISITES Basic knowledge in thermodynamics fluid mechanics. TEACHING METHODS The educational activities are organized into 52 hours of theoretical classes. Slides will be used to describe the machine operative schemes as well as the ones related to the power plants. During the classes exercises will be done. SYLLABUS/CONTENT 1-Energy requirement, resources and consumptions Primary energy source classifications. National energy requirement. 2-Basic principles of fluid mechanics applied to fluid-machinery and thermodynamics Energy equations, Eulero equation, Hugoniot equation and elements about the nozzle behavior. Expansion and compression processes. Velocity triangles in axial and radial flows. Efficiency and stage reaction definitions.. 3-Hydraulic power plants and hydraulic turbines Natural resource management, different kind of hydraulic power plants. Similarity theory applied to hydraulic turbines. Pelton, Francis e Kaplan turbines. 4-Steam and gas axial turbines Effects of the stage reaction on velocity triangles and stage characteristics. Comparison between the different stage reaction architectures. Single and multiple stages machines. 5-Volumetric and dynamic pumps Aspects of the different kind of pumps. Centrifugal pumps. Characteristic curves. Pump selection. Stability. Matching and flow rate control. 6-Volumetric and dynamic compressors Volumetric and dynamic compressors. Centrifugal compressors.
