CODE 66127 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 5 cfu anno 3 INGEGNERIA MECCANICA - ENERGIA E PRODUZIONE 10800 (L-9) - SAVONA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/16 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION SAVONA SEMESTER 2° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: INDUSTRIAL PLANTS + PRODUCTION ENGINEERING TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides the basic knowledge about the behaviour of metallic materials, as well as the influences of the single components of the alloys. The various types of processing by plastic deformation and joining by welding are analysed AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities and individual study will enable students to: classify and select materials on the basis of their chemical-mechanical properties; know the main metal alloys used in manufacturing processes; know the main testing methodologies to be able to determine and compare the characteristics of materials; understand the characteristics of the main plastic deformation and foundry processes, including the main elements of calculation. employ simple theoretical models to evaluate, under appropriate simplifying assumptions, deformation forces. The student should also acquire the ability to choose possible production solutions for a given part, evaluate possible production problems, and acquire general notions of machining and production system management. The course, as a complement to the theoretical training, could include a visit to laboratories in Genoa and/or company visits (subject to agreement with students and communication to CCS). TEACHING METHODS Lectures SYLLABUS/CONTENT After introducing the general concepts on the materials’ choice, the equilibrium diagrams are introduced, with particular attention to the Fe-C state diagram, and an analysis of the influence of the main alloying elements of metallic materials. Next, an examination of how the mechanical characteristics of the material can be modified by performing appropriate heat treatments is carried out. The discussion is completed with the description of the unified tests, through which the mechanical and technological characteristics of the materials are defined. The following point is the description of the foundry processes and the main plastic deformation operations (rolling, forging, extrusion, die drawing) RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Lectures available on Aulaweb. There will be 2 exam appeals for the winter session (mid-January-February) and 4 appeals for the summer session (June, July and September). No special appeals will be granted outside the periods specified in the course regulations, except for working students enrolled part-time ASSESSMENT METHODS Details on how to prepare oral examination and the degree of depth of each topic will be given in the course of the lectures. Examination will focus mainly on the topics covered during the lectures and will aim to assess not only whether the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but whether he or she has acquired the ability to critically evaluate the properties of the main metallic materials in industrial use. The student will also be asked to compare the different types of processing provided for these materials from the perspective of economy and productivity. The ability to express concepts clearly and with correct terminology will also be assessed.
