    OVERVIEW

In the framework of the Special Archival Studies course, which aims to offer students a comprehensive understanding of Italian archives from the Middle Ages to the present day in relation to their respective creators, the module on State and Ecclesiastical Archives specifically delves into the archival holdings generated by the Italian State, diverse pre-unification governmental bodies, and the archives of the Catholic Church.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The purpose of the course is to provide, after setting a basic framework of the discipline and its epistemological status, the tools to understand the dynamics between administrative activity, documentary production and archival conservation, so as to be able to identify, among those available, the most suitable archival sources to meet the different information needs of historical research. The first module of the teaching will focus in particular on state, ecclesiastical and business archives.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

    - demonstrate a solid orientation among the existing archival institutions

    - develop the ability to identify, through historical-institutional investigation paths, the place of conservation of archival funds useful for their research purposes

    - recognize the nature of archival documentation on the basis of its public, private or ecclesiastical institutional origin

    - use appropriate disciplinary language.

    TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is divided into lectures. During the lessons, in-depth seminars will be offered at local archival institutes or in the classroom. In-depth didactic materials and self-assessment materials will be made available to students on AulaWeb.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam takes place orally. The question leaves room for the presentation of a topic of the program chosen by the student and at least one further question formulated by the teacher. However, further questions may be asked by the teacher to better ascertain the candidate's degree of preparation.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will focus on the topics addressed in class and covered by the bibliography. The assessment of the level of preparation of the candidates will take into account the effective mastery of the basic notions of the discipline as well as the ability to critically re-elaborate the themes and problems faced in class, as well as the ability to establish relationships between different themes and topics. For students unable to attend classes, the exam will focus exclusively on the bibliography, without prejudice to the assessment criteria just set out.
