AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To analyse Italian literature themes and issues in its relations with theatre and performance in terms of both the production of dramaturgic texts as well as texts (news stories, autobiographical writings, letters etc) that can contribute to the knowledge of the history of performance. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course, students will be able to: - identify and recognise the specificities of the dramatic text throughout its history; - identify, name and recognise genres, forms, parts (dialogues, monologues, soliloquies, etc.) of the dramatic text - apply acquired knowledge in original work such as open books, reports, analysis sheets - understand and map theatre literature through specific research perspectives. - identify and apply the main junctures in the construction of the theatrical character PREREQUISITES To have a thorough knowledge (at three-year literature level) of the history of Italian literature. To possess the ability to critically analyse, interpret and contextualise literary texts, Being able to expound, with clarity and ownership of critical language. TEACHING METHODS Lectures, annotated readings in class, interactive text work on Perusall, homework and glossary on aulaweb. The lecturer does not prevent lecture recordings as long as they are first approved and then shared with the class. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Programme for students using teaching for 6 cfu 1. Birth, evolution and probable death of the theatrical character. Part two. The course continues the in-depth study of the a.y. 2022/2023, proposing the analysis of different texts from the 17th to the 20th century in which the development of a character, according to the theories and poetics of the time, stands out. Outline summary of the course 1. The evolution of Merope: Pomponio Torelli, Scipione Maffei, Voltaire, Alfieri, d'Annunzio. 2. The birth and ironic death of the social character: Diderot, Goldoni, Giuseppe Giacosa, Pirandello, De Filippo; Ginzburg, Pasolini. The reading of the texts will also be aimed at analysing the way the character is written. Programme for students using the 9 cfu course 1. Analysis of the dramatic text. The playbook, textual organisation, dramatic language. 2. Birth, evolution and probable death of the theatrical character. The path continues the in-depth study of the a.y. 2022/2023, proposing the analysis of dramatic texts from the 17th to the 20th century in which the development of a character, according to the theories and poetics of the time, stands out. the theoretical texts will be reviewed and different theatrical texts from the previous year will be studied. Outline summary of the course. 1. The birth of the literary and theatrical individual and of the historical character: Hamlet, Il Solimano by P. Bonarelli, Alfieri, Manzoni. 2. The birth of the social character: Diderot, Goldoni, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa; 3. Life and death of the character in Pirandello and D'Annunzio, De Filippo; 4. The character within irony: Ginzburg, Pasolini and others. The reading of the texts will also be aimed at analysing the way the character is written. Programme for non-attending students. Students who are unable to attend for various reasons will be required to carry out a series of readings of theatrical texts accompanied by a critical bibliography on the character. Chauvet; Carlo Goldoni (the text will be communicated), Giuseppe Giacosa, Tristi amori and Come le foglie, Luigi Pirandello, Enrico IV, L'altro figlio, Eduardo de Filippo, Filumena Marturano and Questi fantasmi, Natalia Ginzburg, Ti ho sposato per allegria, Pasolini, Affabulazione and Pilade (staged at the National Theatre in Genoa). Programme for non-attending students: the teacher will structure a classroomweb as a synopsis of the course, divided by topics and with the texts that will be read. The programme will therefore be no different for non-attending students, who are in any case invited to contact the teacher for any supplementary readings. An evaluetion grid will be agreed between the teacher and the students. ASSESSMENT METHODS Written analysis form will value the specific outocome corcerning the knowledge of the characteristics of theatre language Open book texts will value the skill of summarize and to read properly a book. Oral interview will value knowledge about plays'history, annotation skill and speaking skills.
