OVERVIEW
Language, culture and institutions of English-speaking countries II aims to provide communication skills in English at a B2 + level of the CEFR for students who achieve 6 ECTS and a C1 level for those who obtain 12 ECTS.
AIMS AND CONTENT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The aim of the module is to consolidate the student's skills acquired in the previous exam and introduce them to the analysis of specialized discourse (politics, diplomacy, economics). At the end of the course students will be able to express their ideas on social and political issues through presentations and speech-delivery in order to improve their skills in public speaking.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, students should be able to know the basic principles of public speaking and apply them in cases where active participation is required in debates and meetings. The expected linguistic levels are B2+ for those taking 6 CFUs and C1 for those taking 12 CFUs
PREREQUISITES
Having acquired at least a B2 level of linguistic competence
TEACHING METHODS
Lectures and group discussions aimed at promoting the use of English and critical analytical skills.
SYLLABUS/CONTENT
The program consists in the study of the principles of public speaking and in the linguistic and extra-linguistic performance analysis of expert speakers (Ted talks). 6 CFU students will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the speakers and the structure of their speeches. Students with 12 CFU will be able to try to put into practice (if attending students) a speech prepared by them and presented in class

The material will be uploaded on Teams and Aulaweb. Any reference texts will be provided at the beginning of the academic year

The Teams code for the programme in Security and international relations in which online attendance is also envisaged will be provided at the beginning of the academic year
EXAMS
EXAM DESCRIPTION
Written (essay writing) for 12 CFU students. They will also have a part of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension for 6 CFU APP and activity related to the news for 6 CFU INFOED.
The oral part consists for everyone in an interview on TEDs held in class (exercises and conversation on the Ted talks). For those who get 12 CFU, if attending students, a public presentation can replace the oral material of the second semester. Non-attending students will bring 10 TED Talks to the interview of which they will have to demonstrate that they know how to discuss in a critical way.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
Written and oral exam starting from December 2023 for the 6 ECTS and starting from May 2024 for the 12 ECTS.
