OVERVIEW

The course belongs to the characterizing activities of the MA and is held by a Professor of the Department of Political Sciences. The course belongs to the scientific field of Sociology of political phenomena.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides students with the perspective with which political sociology studies on environmental risk and aims to problematise the renewed relationship between politics, science and society with regard to established and emerging environmental issues. At the end of the course, students will: a) know the specific socio-political concepts related to the focus of the course; b) understand the correlations between socio-political change and environmental risk in contemporary Western societies; c) apply their knowledge and understanding to critically evaluate the syntheses adopted in contemporary societies between the demand for environmental protection and the political response.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student, who will have actively attended and participated in the planned activities, will be able to:
1) define and distinguish the concepts of social change, development, globalization, risk, vulnerability

 2) interpret the processes of transformation of the risk in postmodern society  
3) apply knowledge and understanding to environmental risk.

PREREQUISITES

The basic knowledge of political sociology is suggested.

For this purpose any edition of a Handbook of Political Sociology may be used. Suggested: M. Rush, Politics and Society. An Introduction to Political Sociology, Routledge.

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom-taught lessons, group discussions, presentations of individual or team works

Depending on the epidemiological situation, if necessary, the course will be carried out in distance learning: all the details will be published in this case in the AulaWeb of the course.

UD1 – Radicalization of modernity

UD2 – Natural risk

UD3 – Society, Politics and Environmental Risk

UD4 – Individual or group work

To take the exam, students must enter Aulaweb before the beginning of the course where they will find all the necessary study material: all the materials available in Aulaweb is subject matter of the exam.

The materials are:

1) The slides of the classes (available in Aulaweb)

2) Lecture notes (available in Aulaweb)

3) Open access study materials on the network (specified in Aulaweb)

4) Study materials accessible through the online resources of the Ateneo Library System (specified in Aulaweb)

Students who do not attend classes should contact the teacher at the beginning of the course for any necessary clarification about the program.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be held orally. The exam must be taken in Italian. The Commission is designated by the Department Council and chaired by the course professor.

 

Students with disabilities must write to the contact person (prof. Aristide Canepa – aristide.canepa@unige.it) and not to single teachers directly

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The evaluation criteria consist of: coherence of the answer with the Commissioner's question, knowledge of the issues addressed, precision and appropriation of the scientific language on the subject, capacity for argumentation and autonomous reasoning, ability to summarize, effectiveness in proposing reflections of the authors treated, synergic use of the knowledge acquired from the texts and lessons.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Non-attending students are asked to contact the teacher at least three months before the exam session they decide to take the exam.

 

To take the exam, foreign students (Erasmus+ program or other international programs of mobility) must contact the Professor at least two months before the exam.

 

Para tomar el examen, los estudiantes extranjeros (Programa Erasmus+ u otros programas internacionales de movilidad) deben contactar al Profesor como mínimo dos meses antes del examen.
