The course generalises the concept of structural design from a deterministic to a probabilistic viewpoint. Compliance to requirements is no more assessed by comparison of representative values of loads and resistance, but on the basis of the probability of crisis of the structure (according to the various definitions of crisis) and, possibly, of the inherent consequences.
The course provides the concepts of structural reliability and safety with application to marine loads and structures and procedures for their quantification. The concept is applied to the reliability analysis of marine structures with reference to strength and fatigue analysis
The student shall possess the knowledge needed to understand the principles of structural assessment
The module of Probability and Statistics is to be followed and exam passed before the module of Structural Safety.
