AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims to provide basic knowledge on the design and construction aspects of systems and circuits for radio communication, taking into account the points of view relating to analog design, microwave theory and communication systems.

In particular, the architectures of the transceivers, their building blocks and the aspects related to the realization of circuits both at discrete components and at the integrated circuit level will be examined.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lesson and laboratory exercises (4 hours)

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The main topics considered in the program are:

  • Heterodyne, direct conversion and image frequency rejection transceiver architectures.
  • Resonators and networks for impedance transformation
  • Low Noise Amplifiers (LNA)
  • Passive and active Mixers
  • Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCO), phase noise mechanisms and various circuit topologies
  • Phase Locked Loops (PLL)
  • Integer-N and fractional-N frequency synthesizers
  • Power amplifiers and linearization techniques

The theory of modulation and wireless standards from the point of view of the designer of RF electronic circuits will be briefly recalled.

As regards the contribution of this course  to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, it must be considered that, in general, Electronics constitutes the main "discipline" on which the development of the past decades of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is based, and will also be for the future. With this perspective training electronic engineers expert in the development of data transceiver systems will allow society to possess the necessary knowledge for the application of these technologies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda UN 2030 (consider, for example, in addition to the widespread technologies of broadband cellular networks, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc., the development of IoT (Internet of Things) and WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) applications, in the fields of safety, health, teaching, territorial monitoring, etc.).
