AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills about ships buoyancy and stability, in relation with both the intact and the damaged condition. A specific reference is given to the relevant IMO rules, discussing their impact on the ship design process.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

the course will enalble the capabilities to:

- design ships (especially passenger ships) in compliance with the most important international rules about buoyancy and stability of ships both in intact and damaged conditions

- calculate the final equilibrium condition and the relevan stability of a ship in damged condition.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures in classrom;

Practical applications in classrooms.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Safety as a constraint/target in the design of units having passengers as a payload

Introduction to the Rule Making environment: IMO, Flag State, Classification Societies.

The righting arm (RA):

- relation between  RA and ship main dimensions (midship section)

- the RA at very high heel angles

- the down-flooding angle: watertight and weather-tight closures

- influence on the righting arm deriving from

  • Trim (initial trim, “free to trim”)

  • Wave profile

The linear roll motion of ship for the evaluation of  the roll period

Inclining moments:

- effect of wind

- effect of turning at speed

The Intact Stability Code 2008

- General stability criteria

- Wave and wind combined effect (whether criterion)

- Special requirements for passenger ships

Lightship weigh estimation

Inclining experiment

Solutions for the ship in damage:

- loading of weight  method

- constant displacement method

Deterministic methodology for safety subdivision (former SOLAS)

- Allowable length curve

Probabilistic methodology for safety subdivision (SOLAS 2009)

- Required subdivision index R

- Attained subdivision index A

- Probabilistic parameter relevant to the damage p,r,v

- Probabilistic parameter relevant  the ship survivability s

Grounding

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral exam.

In order to be admitted to the oral exam, students have to present and discuss with the teacher the two assignements given during the semester in classrooom.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam is aimed at evaluating the knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects related to the ship stability. It consists of two open questions about the topics developed in classroom during the semester. One of the two questions in relation with the topics of the assignements.

Questions are aimed to assess the capability of the students to discuss about theorethical and practical aspects of ship hydrostatics and stability.

Specific attention will be given to the capability of indicating the basic assuptions together with the input data, the target of the procedure and its rational developement.

During the (previous) conversation about the assignements, the students will be requested to give evidence of capability to apply in practice the theorethical methodologies with the proper critical attitude toward results.

The final grade is based on the ability to describe, autonomously, with appropriate terms and with critical thinking, the topics illustrated during lessons and developped during the home assigments.
