CODE 94664 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 5 cfu anno 2 ENGINEERING FOR NATURAL RISK MANAGEMENT 10553 (LM-26) - SAVONA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-INF/02 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION SAVONA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: REMOTE SENSING AND ELECTROMAGNETIC TECHNIQUES FOR RISK MONITORING TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides the fundamental skills related to radar remote sensing and electromagnetic techniques for monitoring structures and protecting systems. In particular, approaches based on radar concepts, impedance and capacitance tomography, inverse scattering, and microwaves tomography will be discussed with particular reference to civil and environmental applications. Basic concepts of electromagnetic compatibility, including examples of electromagnetic interference, radiated and conducted emissions and susceptibility, crosstalk, shielding and system design will be provided. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides knowledge and skills concerning the fundamentals of electromagnetic techniques for monitoring structures and protecting systems, with reference to both their working principles and their use in civil and environmental applications. In particular, after an introduction to the basic concepts of antennas, electromagnetic compatibility, and electromagnetic interaction between waves and materials, the theory of radar systems will be detailed, with particular reference to radar surveillance and monitoring, radar remote sensing, and ground penetrating radar. Recent advances on inverse scattering and microwaves tomography will be also briefly discussed. Other electromagnetic monitoring techniques, such as impedance and capacitance tomography, will be introduced. The aim of the course is to allow students to understand how to deal with commonly-used techniques involved in the study and design of electromagnetic monitoring and protecting systems. TEACHING METHODS Lectures. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Overview of basic concepts of electromagnetic fields. Introduction to radiation and antennas. Interaction between electromagnetic waves and structures. Radar systems (basic concepts). Radar for remote sensing applications (SLAR and SAR). CW and FMCW radars for monitoring applications. Ground penetrating radar. Impedance and capacitance tomography.
