AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is aimed to delve into the most relevant consequences of acute and chronic exposure to some of the most diffuse xenobiotics that can be part of environmental pollution or can be particularly concentrated in some workplaces.

Students will acquire basic knowledge of toxicokinetics (including xenobiotics absorbance, metabolism, and elimination) and toxicodynamics (mechanisms of toxicity). Students will also learn to recognize signs of intoxication and the available therapeutical strategies.

• Mechanisms  of toxicokinetic: Absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination
• Mechanisms of toxicity  – DL50 – safety sheets
• Toxicity of xenobiotics on organs
• Heavy metals
• Pesticides
• Gas vapors, fumes, solvents

The exams of toxicology will be held in form of discussion

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Rather than mnemonic knowledge of the topics of the course, students will be encouraged to discuss some major aspects of xenobiotic intoxication and safety measures by discussing case reports.
