The course is a design workshop on buildings restoration. It deals with buildings regulated by heritage protection law or however meaningful for conservation because of their characteristics. The application to a case study aims to simulate, in all its aspects, a real restoration design process.
The teachers are Prof. Daniela Pittaluga and Prof. Lucina Napoleone. Arch. Stefania Pantarotto teaches the architectural survey module and the "restoration techniques" module. Arch. Gerolamo Stagno teaches the wood material module. Regarding the diagnostic techniques supports, geol. Roberto Ricci teaches the mineralogical-petrographic analyzes of mortars, Prof. Daniela Pittaluga teaches bricks mensiochronological analysis.
AIMS AND CONTENT
The aim of "Laboratorio di Restauro" fraz.B is to provide students with the information and tools, conceptual and operational, necessary to act consciously on existing buildings and, in particular, on the oldest architectural heritage subjected to protection.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student must be able to: recognize the construction methods of historical buildings, interpret their archaeological signs, recognize materials decay phenomena, analyze possible causes of such phenomena and formulate hypotheses on possible interventions aimed to remove or mitigate the effects produced by degradation phenomena. He/she will also recognize the principles of main conservation techniques and experiment with possible applications on real cases. The student will also be confronted with possible interventions of architectural heritage valorization.
Ex-cathedra lectures, also with the help of professional and institutional experts, aimed at providing a broad and general picture of the tools and technical and operational problems of architectural restoration in our contemporary world. Among these stand out: the methods and forms of analysis and non-destructive diagnosis of architecture; the methods and tools of historical analysis of indirect sources; the forms and tools of analysis of direct sources, through the contributions of the Archeology of Architecture; the contents, forms and requirements of the conservation, maintenance and restoration project; the regulatory and protection framework in Italy and abroad; operational laboratory activities, carried out in the classroom and / or on site, in which students will be guided on the analysis and diagnosis of an existing artifact chosen in agreement with the teacher, up to the design of the interventions for its conservation, maintenance and / or restoration. The activities of the Laboratory benefit of the technical support of the Laboratory for Analytical Methods for Restoration and History of the Building (MARSC) of the DAD Department.
The course program is divided into two phases.
Phase 1: Restoration Diagnostics 1.1 Survey and photo-straightening 1.2 Recognition of materials and their processing. Drafting of thematic maps 1.3 Recognition of decay phenomena and their causes. Drafting of thematic maps 1.4 Archaeological analysis of the building. Recognition of construction and transformation phases. Drafting of thematic maps
Phase 2: Restoration intervention 2.1 Intervention hypothesis: between conservation and valorization 2.2 Intervention techniques 2.3 Drafting of essential documents for the project (thematic maps, technical reports, bill of quantities, special tender specifications)
Due to the vastness and complexity of the topics addressed, more detailed and precise bibliographic references will be provided during the course of the didactic activities.

The exam consists in the presentation of the project and analysis documents carried out during the year and in their individual discussion, in the light of the theoretical-operational contents developed during the year.
Intermediate evaluation and self-assessment tests will be carried during the year. These tests will be used by teachers to calibrate the program; the tests for students will help to verify the actual contents learned.
The criteria with which these tests and the final exam will be evaluated are: completeness of information, clarity of presentation, consistency and methodological rigor.
