AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The aim of the module is to develop the designer's awareness of the complex and delicate relationships between environment and built space. The fundamental principle is that the project - of the territory, of the city, of architecture - should be based on knowledge of local environmental conditions and be taken as an opportunity and tool for the rehabilitation of the environment and the sustainable development of the loca community rather than minimizing any negative effects on the environment afterwards.
Upon completion of the form the student:
• will have acquired knowledge about the influence of ecology and environmentalism on the development of theories and practices of territorial governance and the design of the built space,
• will be able to set up a study to recognize and evaluate the fundamental relationships that exist in a given territory between the environment and human settlement,
• will have developed the ability to elaborate critical observations regarding the inclusion of a project in a given environmental context
The teaching consists of:
- lectures given by the teacher
- an exercise, carried out with the Ecology module, during which the student will examine a portion of the assigned area and detect the main environmental issues and the elements that characterize the relationship between human settlement and the environment.
In recent decades, the environmental implications of the city and territory project have assumed increasing weight, leading to reflect on the very foundations of the disciplines of urban planning and architecture. The module sketches the current situation to sensitize the student about the environmental problems connected to the transformations of the built space and provides essential notions and references to understand how urban planning has redefined objectives and tools in relation to the vast set of scientific theories, historical and archaeological analyzes, currents of thought that have changed the attitude of society towards the environment and that lead to redirect the project.
Topics of the lessons:
• The urban phenomenon at a turning point. Metropolitan dimension and environmental emergency in territorial governance.
• Urban planning and ecology. A historical framework and an evolutionary path.
• Marginal territories and "repair" of the territory in contemporary Italy.
• Ways of reading space. Morphological analyzes, readings and interpretations of the historic settlement, urban spaces and open spaces to redesign the territory and produce new sustainable landscapes.
Case study is the Val Bisagno, a portion of the Metropolitan City of Genoa in which environmental problems and needs for urban reorganization emerge. In the landscape, the historical stratification of the rural settlements, the suburban morphologies of the ancient regime and the modern and contemporary urban expansions is evident, against the background of an environment still rich in naturalistic values whose equilibrium has been put in crisis by violent transformations, phenomena of decay and abandonment processes.
Val Bisagno offers interesting ideas to analyze critical conditions common to many territories that surround the urban fabric of metropolitan cities and to set policies and projects capable of combining environmental redevelopment and the reduction of hydrogeological risk with a new demand for "living in nature ”Using the services of the city (a question that the recent pandemic has brought out more clearly).
With the guidance of the teachers, students will apply the teachings to real situations and will experiment, in a simplified form, methods and practices of environmental and territorial analysis and assessment aimed at the architectural and urban planning project. The exercise will end with the development of a PPoint presentation.

The exam is oral. The presentation of the exercise by the candidate will give the opportunity for asking further information on the work done and verifying the degree of knowledge of the topics covered in class.
During the presentation and discussion of the work done, the student must demonstrate:
• to know the main topics covered in the lessons
• to be able to lay out and carry on a study aimed at ascertaining the environmental conditions and problems of a settled area
• to be able to identify relationships between the environmental conditions of a place and the project of architecture, city, territory.
