The course deals with Marine Engineering which includes propulsion systems, auxiliary and safety systems of ships. The course is divided into two modules: Reliability and Safety of Ship systems and Propulsion Plants.
The Reliability and Safety module deals with RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) engineering disciplines applied to ship systems and Risk Analysis applied to ships.
The Ship Propulsion Plants module deals with the operating principles of marine propulsion for different types of ships. Particular attention will be given to the aspects related to dynamics and control. Both the theoretical / methodological and practical aspects will be illustrated, with particular emphasis on advanced design and numerical / implementation aspects.
The Reliability and Safety module deals with RAMS and Risk Analysis applied to ship systems. The module will provide students with in-depth knowledge of the subject as well as the ability to deal with ship plant problems in a holistic way.
The Ship Propulsion Plants module deals with the study of marine propulsion systems and it is performed through a detailed analysis of the several system components, taking into account the mutual interactions. The module also deals with advanced design methodologies to catch the technological trends of the sector.
The module will provide engineering and soft skills to face present and future environmental issues related to the shipping sector, in accordance with UN Goals n. 14 and n. 15.
Knowledge of static methods for the design of marine propulsion. Basic knowledge of the principles of naval architecture. Principles of programming.
