By the end of the course the student will be able to: -describe the main functional groups and classes of compounds in organic chemistry (structure and nomenclature), -describe, with examples, (bio) macromolecules and natural polymers, -discuss the general mechanisms of reactions in organic chemistry, -evaluate the properties of organic compounds in relation to their structure. TEACHING METHODS Lectures, exercises and group discussion of problems on chemical reactions and properties, quizzes. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Carbon hybridization. The main functional groups in Organic Chemistry, chemical-physical properties and IUPAC nomenclature of: hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, benzene), alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives. Other organic compounds of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus (notes). Chemical kinetics. Main reaction mechanisms: nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, elimination, nucleophilic addition to the carbonyl, nucleophilic acyl substitution. Macromolecules of biological interest: carbohydrates (monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides), amino acids and proteins, lipids (triglycerides). Nucleic acids. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Notes of the Course, exercises (Aulaweb). Chemistry reference textbooks: J.McMurry, Fondamenti di Chimica Organica, Zanichelli; T.Poon, Introduzione alla Chimica Organica, EdiSES; J.G.Smith, Fondamenti di Chimica Organica, McGraw Hill TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD ELISABETTA FINOCCHIO Ricevimento: By appointment. E-mail: Elisabetta.Finocchio@unige.it, phone: 010.3352919 ALESSANDRO ALBERTO CASAZZA Ricevimento: Students could discuss with the teacher by fixing an appointment. Exam Board ELISABETTA FINOCCHIO (President) MARCO PANIZZA (President) LESSONS LESSONS START see: Portale EasyAcademy Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Oral (partial) exam. The final exam result is the average mark of the two modules marks. ASSESSMENT METHODS After completing this course, the student will be able to manage skills and operating method for the approach of problems related to properties and structure of organic molecules and biomolecules and their reactivity, also focusing on technolgical and food applications. The oral exam will verify the ability of the student to assign the correct name to organic compounds, and to analyze and compare properties and structure of the main classes of compounds in organic chemistry (including biomacromolecules). During the exam, the student should also be able to discuss reaction mechanisms and products, describing them in general and critically analyzing specific problems. The correctness and completeness of the answers and also the quality of the exposure, with the use of the appropriate specialized lexicon, will be evaluated.
