AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to present the complex geographies of food production, distribution and consumption in a globalised world, focusing on the processes that link local food chains with global markets and the relationship between food policies and environmental and social sustainability. On these premises, the course explores the relationship between food and territorial processes in urban and rural contexts that are interrelated and located in various regions of the planet, paying specific attention to the Italian and Ligurian case in particular.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the teaching students will be able to:

  • know the basic issues that characterise the geographies of food in the contemporary world;
  • understand the multi-scalaraterritorial dynamics underlying the processes of food production and distribution;
  • analyse local development processes arising from food production and distribution processes;
  • analyse local food policies in different urban and rural contexts;
  • interpret the effects of local food policies on territorial processes on a local and global scale.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching will be organised alternating lectures in frontal, participatory and asynchronous format: frontal lessons will be aimed at identifying and understanding basic knowledge; participatory teaching will be based on problem-based strategies aimed at stimulating the ability to analyse certain problems relating to the relationship between local food policies and local development; asynchronous online teaching will be used to provide students with detailed knowledge on local food policies.

The materials used during the lectures will be uploaded to AulaWeb together with other materials (reports, links to databases, etc.) aimed at clarifying the quantitative aspects of the phenomena studied.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it  ), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The teaching will cover the following topics:

  • geography, territory and local development;
  • food geographies;
  • food as a typical product and made in Italy;
