AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the main concepts in the sociological approach and develop two main focuses. The first concerns the key passages in the history of sociological thought, and the fundamental concepts and notions of sociological theory, with particular reference to the dimensions of culture, structure and power. The second concerns the sociology of tourism, with particular reference to the social and cultural aspects of the relationship between supply and demand in the tourism market and the interactions unfolded in the contexts crossed by tourist flows. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Overall learning outcomes: - acknowledging and understanding - the students should acquire adequate knowledge and an effective ability to understand the socio-cultural determinants of tourism demand and the specific characteristics of tourism in its social and relational component, as well as what changes occur in demand and supply in the information society. They should also be familiar with the main stages and instruments of social research and how to set up and carry it out. - ability to apply knowledge and understanding - the students must be able to apply the knowledge acquired and to understand and solve problems relating to how to identify local tourism resources that can be exploited, how to structure and promote them in a manner consistent with the socio-cultural characteristics of demand and with the opportunities offered by the new media, also by applying social research tools and techniques - autonomy of judgement - the students must be able to use both conceptually and operationally the knowledge acquired, understanding in which application contexts it can be used with what limits and potential. - communication skills - the students must acquire the technical language typical of the discipline in order to communicate clearly and unambiguously with specialist and non-specialist interlocutors. In particular, they must be able to communicate the findings of the discipline and sociological research to the various stakeholders in the field. - learning skills - the students must develop adequate learning skills that will enable them to continue to explore the main themes of the discipline independently, especially in the working contexts in which they will be working. Specific learning outcomes: the Sociology of Tourism teaching aims to provide basic knowledge about the seminal concepts of sociological knowledge and develop two main focuses (see 2 different learning modules): The first learning module covers the key passages in the history of sociological thought and focuses on the fundamental concepts and dimensions of sociological theory, with particular reference to the dimensions of culture, structure and power. Learning outcomes of the first module - to master the sociological language - to know the historical and cultural context in which sociology emerged as an empirical science - to know and critically apply the main sociological theories in relation to the dimensions of culture, social structure and power - to know the main sociological interpretations of inequalities and apply them to critically read the consequences of inequalities in terms of social stratification - to know and apply the main theories on the sociology of consumption The second learning module concerns the sociology of tourism, with particular regard to the social and cultural aspects involved in the relationship between supply and demand in the tourism market and the interactions unfolded in the territories crossed by tourist flows. Learning outcomes of the second module - to know the historical evolution of tourism practices and its cultural meanings - to know the main theories and analytical approaches in the sociology of tourism and to contextualise them within the broader reflection on the sociology of consumption - to explore the relationship between identity construction processes and the symbolic meanings of tourism practices - to know and question the impacts of digitalisation on choices, practices and meanings relating to tourism experiences.
