OVERVIEW

The course introduces to the knowledge of banking, covering the main issues: role of banking in financial system, economic functions of banks, theory of financial internediation, regulation and supervision, productive functions of banks (lending, provisioning, liquidity, asset and liabilities amangement), lending and provisions products and their technical features, risk management, income statement and balance sheet

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course introduces to the knowledge of banking, covering the main issues: role of banking in financial system, economic functions of banks, theory of the bank and financial intermediation, regulation and supervision, Basel 1,2 and 3 regime, capital and liquidity risk management, lending policies and products, provision policies and products, asset & liability management, profitability and risks, credit risk management, capital management, liquidity anagement, income statement and balance sheet.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The students will learn to analyse and intepretate the performance of banks, will undestand the role of banks in the financial and economic system and their functions, will be given theoretical framework and practical knowledge to understand how banks behave and how they attain their objectives.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledges in business management and administration and in economics of capital markets and financial institutions

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons by the teacher and by practitioners, and/or reading of the textbooks.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Main topics:

Banks and financial system

Theories of banking

Regulation in banking sector: capital regulation and different stages in Basel regulation

Functions of banks: lending, monetary, provision, transmission of monetary policy

Lending  policies; credit risk evaluation, credit risk management and internal rating systems

Provision policies

Main banking products: deposits, short term and long term credits

LIquidity management and liquidity risk

Security activities: capital market, trading, asset management

Asset liability management and interest rate risk

Income statement, balanche sheet and accoujnting principles
