AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module focuses on the assessment and discussion of the market organization and how it can vary thanks to the energy and ecological transitions. Main points of analysis will be linked to the elements that could impact the industry competitiveness and needed market investments. In order to achieve its aim, the module will include an analysis of main market trends and how they could impact on the main involved industries. Moreover, the module will present to students specific assessment techniques, applying them to case studies so to enhance students capability of performing market analyses. At the end of the module, the students will achieve a complete understanding of the economic effects of the energy and ecological transitions on a differentiated array of industrial sectors, mastering alternative assessment methods able to evaluate the impacts and the trends of such transitions.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the module, the student will be able to critically analyze both the energy markets and the effects of transitions (digital, ecological and energy) on production processes. In particular, the student will acquire the ability to determine the main competitive factors and the effect of the innovative processes on the economic factors linked to market performance whenever transitions start to take off.

Furthermore, the student will critically analyze the effect of the UNSDGs  on the competitiveness of various economic sectors.

Within the teaching, a team work approach will be developed (also in collaboration with groups of foreign students), flipped classrooms and critical discussions in class on specialized material reworked independently will be also prioritised as main teaching approach. These activities will allow the student to acquire advanced soft skills (e.g. Functional Literacy, Social, Management, Learning to Learn and Personal).

TEACHING METHODS

The activities will be carried out both in class and with organised self-directed activities, using also online teaching (both synchronously and asynchronously), according to the referenced learning outcomes.

Within the programme, team work will be developed (also in collaboration with groups of foreign students, through the COIL approach), and the use of flipped classrooms and critical discussions in class on specialized material reworked independently will be prioritised.

These activities will allow the student to acquire specific soft skills at an advanced level (e.g. Functional Literacy, Social, Management, Learning to Learn and Personal skills).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module has the aim of analyzing, in complementarity with what has been done in the module of "The economic rationale of environmental sustainable transition", the following elements:

- Theoretical framework of how innovation impact on the structure of economic markets and the level of competition between different players;
- Identification of the economic and regulatory characteristics of the value chains involved in the transition (with identification of trends and suitable quantitative indicators);
- Evaluation of the market effects - and of the production process - of the energy and ecological transition (e.g. life cycle assessment, circular paths of the supply chain, modification of the logistic/distribution paradigms);
- Analysis of changes to the current logistic/distribution paradigm and various market issues (e.g. acceptability) to accompany the technological transformation;
- Discussion of the main regional effects of the ecological and energy transition on local economic factors (e.g. infrastructures, standards, investments);
- Methodologies for regulating and organising key local markets so to facilitate the transition (e.g. application of game theory, tariffs and subsidies).

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be oral.

The group work and the in-class activities will be evaluated and will contribute to the final mark.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will be oral and aimed at verifying the achievement of the learning outcomes.

In particular, critical thinking and independent elaboration - both in group and individually - of the typical aspects of the economic analysis applied to the context of ecological and energy transition and the knowledge of the different economic effects of innovative processes will be considered relevant.
