OVERVIEW

The History of International Relations seminar aims to examine in depth some of the themes, protagonists and turning points that characterised the 20th century and that have been dealt with briefly within the History of International Relations course.

The seminar envisages the participation of scholars and lecturers from other Italian universities, who will deal in depth with the chosen theme.

For the academic year 2024-2025, the seminar will focus on Cinema and international relations in the XX century

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The seminar aims at providing the students an adequate knowledge, from the methodological and cultural point of view, of the role played cinema and films in describing the main turning points of the the international system in the XX century 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the seminar, students will be expected to:

- understand the role played by cinema and films in describing the main turning points of the XX century;

- apply the knowledge acquired to current events, that is, analyse current international dynamics using the tools provided by the teaching as a key to understanding them;

- develop a critical judgement of the international dynamics of the 20th century involving the UK and be able to critically analyse its role in the current international system;

- increase their communication skills, both in written form (paper to be presented at the end of the seminar) and in oral form using appropriate vocabulary (through class discussions)

- develop one's learning skills through class discussion and the study of suggested reference texts;

Teaching contributes to the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.

TEACHING METHODS

The lectures will be held in presence. Attendance is mandatory.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

In order to obtain the 2 CFUs students MUST

1.       ALSO attend the entire seminar, during which attendance will be recorded;

2.       EITHER hand in via Aulaweb a paper of between 3,000 and 4,000 characters in length (header and title will not be counted) on one of the chosen papers presented during the day. The paper must be coherent with what was presented by the speaker and papers copied from the internet, from another source or prepared using ChatGPT or other AI software will be deemed ineligible. ASSESSMENT METHODS

Assessment of the written test: knowledge of the main themes and historical facts covered in the seminar are the main elements of assessment. These are complemented by the ability to synthesise information and clarity in the exposition of content. Requests for additional questions to increase the grade will not be accepted.  

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with “Special Needs”: the compensatory/dispensative tools recognized by the Department coordinator, Prof. Aristide Canepa, and by the University Service for students with special needs are applied. It is suggested to contact by Prof. Canepa and the lecturers of this course at the beginning of the lectures.
