AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is the systematic study of the French language at the phonological, syntactic and lexical level. It also aims to develop students' oral and written skills by paying particular attention to the language of the political, economic and legal world.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

The course has the following training objectives

1.         To develop knowledge of the French language in its phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical dimensions.

2.         To develop the student's written and oral skills.

3.         To introduce the main concepts of discourse analysis.

4.         To introduce the main debates in France on current issues (gender and migration).

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course offers the possibility of 6 or 12 CFUs corresponding to 36 and 72 hours of lectures.

At the end of the course, students will be able to follow a complex argument in a clearly articulated discourse related to the field of interest. They will be able to distinguish main topics from secondary topics, and to distinguish the point of view expressed from the facts being reported. Students will be able to read texts related to the field of interest largely independently. They will have acquired a broad vocabulary in the production of texts of a register consistent with the field of interest.

PREREQUISITES

Students enrolled in the course must have a language proficiency level corresponding to level B1 of the CEFR.

Those who do not have this level may, during the first year of the course, ask the instructor for permission to follow as an auditor the lectureship for three-year degrees (which require, for the languages mentioned, the attainment of level B1) as well as the access codes to the language self-study courses available at the following address https://clire.aulaweb.unige.it/

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons are given in the presential mode. Attendance is strongly recommended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. Theoretical module: The syllabus may be subject to modification with possible insights into current events in the French-speaking area; in any case, each topic will be presented through ad-hoc teaching material, which will be uploaded on Aulaweb.

The theory module is divided into two parts of 36 hours each, both compulsory, taught by Professors Gattiglia and Ozza.

    Theoretical Module (Gattiglia)

The theory module held by Prof. Gattiglia will focus on institutional speeches and/or speeches delivered by institutional figures from the French-speaking area. The bodies of work will concern the thematic axes of gender and immigration. Various types of speeches will be analysed (laws, official speeches, posts on social networks, campaign posters, videos, etc.).

The theoretical module will provide students with basic elements of discourse analysis that will help them identify the main discursive, rhetorical and argumentative strategies used in political argumentation.

    Theoretical Module (Ozza)

The theoretical module taught by Prof. Ozza will cover the French historical and social background in the 20th century through the study of some key issues related to the Second World War, in particular:

    1.         The Resistance and the Vichy regime.

    2.         The right to vote.

    3.         The condition of women.

    Language exercise classes:

Development of B2-level skills through morphosyntactic, lexical, textual exercises.
