OVERVIEW

The course aims at providing a general overview of the origin and development of political parties in comparative perspective, their transformation and new models.

The course provides a general overview on the study of lobbying in comparative perspective.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student is able to: - master the main thematic nodes of the European party system from 1979 to 2019; - know the basic methodological tools for electoral and party system analyses; - develop critical judgment skills; - elaborate studies on specific themes on parties and party systems in different historical periods; - expose and argue with appropriate vocabulary researches of political science

  • Comprehension of the origin and development of political parties;
  • knowledge of the different types of political parties;
  • expertise in methodological approaches;
  • discussion and theoretical hypotheses to be developed;
  • expertise in the field of European institution and public administration.

PREREQUISITES

Good knowledge of Political Science theories

Discussions in rooms, seminars, readings with syllabus

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1) the origin of political parties: an overview;

2) types of political parties in literature;

3) the emrgence of new political parties: neopopulist, regionalist, digital parties;

4) parties in electoral competition;

5) party families in Europe

6) lobbies, lobbying

7) direct and indirect lobbying

8) policy making

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination is oral, held in person and only during official exam sessions. It usually consists of three questions  and lasts approximately 20 minutes.

It should also be noted that attending in-person at least 50% of the lessons allows students be examined on the programme for 'attending students'.

The course is delivered in Italian and, as a general rule, the exam must be taken in Italian

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Exams aim to test whether the student is able to identify, understand and apply the theories covered in the programme, as well as to use appropriate scientific terminology.
