OVERVIEW

The course will consist of lectures covering the main aspects of paediatric orthopaedics relevant to the integrated course. There will be ample possibility of interaction with the teacher by asking questions and case based discussions.

To provide students with core knowledge of pediatric orthopedics needed to understand diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for the children they will look after.

Teaching aims

 

The aims of the course are:

  • provide students with the core knowledge of main orthopaedics and trauma conditions of the growing children;
  • teach students how to perform basic differential diagnosis between orthopaedic conditions and other related conditions;
  • teach students how to recognize different stages of evolution and growth of the lower limbs till adulthood;

Learning goals:

  • learn how to recognize and treat main paediatric orthopaedic conditions with special interest on occupational therapy and rehabilitaion
  • learn how to perform a correct differential diagnosis between pathologic trauma and orthopaedic conditions and growth-related, non-pathologic conditions;
  • learn how to recognize and classify different types of growth cartilage injuries and predict evolution and outcome of the lesions;

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures will be supported by powerpoint slide projection. All slides will be made available to the students and will help their learning of the topics. In case of specific topics, there will be invited lecturers who will provide the students with the latest updates with regard to diagnosis and treatment of specific disoders.

  • Hand and upper limb deformities
  • Limbs deformities (uni- or multi-axial)

  • Paediatric spinal deformities

Oral exam score on a 0 – 30 scale

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will verify the achievement of the expected learning objectivesby checking the ability of the students to apply their knowledge of the paediatric orthopaedic disorders and reasoning skills to real-based clinical cases.
