OVERVIEW

The Geriatric Rehabilitation Course will provide the attendants with the basic geriatric notions for a rehabilitative activity in the physical and in the other personal dimensions of the old subject.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The attendants the course have to acquire the ability to address the problems of the geriatric patient through knowledge of the prevalence of elderly,  the prevention and prognosis of the characteristic diseases,  the patient assessment, and the allocation within the health services; they have to acquire the teamwork skills. The main target is to build a proper and appropriate rehabilitation pathway for the elderly person and to know the potential and limits of the rehabilitation.
 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The attendants will have to learn: the Italian and regional epidemiological trend of the aging population and the related health needs; The theoretical-practical significance of fragility, the causes, and the clinical consequences; The characteristics of major geriatric syndromes; The problems of the old on the community and in the hospital environment, including problems related to hospitalization. The acquisition of good communication with the elderly patient is required.
A crucial element is the knowledge of the available health services network, and the correct utilization and effectively allocation of the  not self-sufficient patient, and the patient over 80 years. Other issues contributing to the training are: the rehabilitation possibilities in the hospital and in the community, designed on the basis of comprehensive geriatric assessment and the identification of realistic and achievable goals, the role of Geriatric Evaluation Unit and intensive rehabilitation (of physiatrics competence) in the functional recovery of the elderly. Finally, the problems related to the physical, social, and mental condition of the elderly patient and their role in rehabilitation will be addressed.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Demography of aging; The concept of fragility and its clinical consequences; Major geriatric syndromes, clinical pattern observed frequently in the community and in the hospital with possible adverse events and the related rehabilitation for acute events and in the chronic degenerative diseases; Communication with the old patient; The disability of the over sixty-five and >75; Geriatric rehabilitation and its problems related to dementia, depression, chronic-degenerative diseases.
