AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Learn and acquire the ability to discuss the most recent scientific findings in terms of prevention, assistance and innovation, including technology, in the field of neurological rehabilitation. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the student should know: the anatomical and physiological bases of modern neurological rehabilitation, the phases of the rehabilitation process with identification of the hierarchical objectives of the latter the different characteristics of a rehabilitation service according to the type of patient the scientific basis of rehabilitation treatment the main elements of precision and evidence-based medicine TEACHING METHODS The course is held in the second semester of the second year through lectures that make use of slide projections. SYLLABUS/CONTENT General principles of neurological rehabilitation. ICDH and ICF and neurological rehabilitation. Goals of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation process. Phases of the rehabilitation process. ICF core set. Hierarchical goals of rehabilitation. Assessment in rehabilitation. Rating scales. Characteristics of a rehabilitation service. Evidence-based medicine and rehabilitation. Clinical trials in rehabilitation. Meta-analysis. Levels of scientific evidence. Neuroplasticity: basic principles, levels, mechanisms. Plasticity dependent experience, dependent use, dependent learning. Forms of neuroplasticity. Contribution of neuroimaging and non-invasive cortical stimulation to the study of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity and neurorehabilitation. Adaptive and mal-adaptive neuroplasticity. Recovery versus compensation. Motor learning: motor adaptation and motor sequence learning. Phases of motor learning and anatomical-functional correlations. Characteristics of motor learning: massed practice, distributed practice, variable session, contextual interference. Rehabilitation methods based on the principle of motor learning: Arm ability training, Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), Electromyogram-triggered neuromuscular stimulation, Interactive robotic therapy, Virtual reality-based rehabilitation, Motor imagery. Motor rehabilitation in stroke; dimensions of the problem. The process of cortical reorganization in recovery. The role of timing, of the intensity of specific task characteristics in rehabilitation treatment. Rehabilitation treatment in hospital (Sroke unit), outpatient, at home. Rehabilitation strategies and their algorithm. ICF and rehabilitation treatment in stroke. Rehabilitation in neuromuscular diseases. Cognitive rehabilitation: general principles. Cognitive functions. Physiological aspects, evaluation and principles of rehabilitation of deficits in the main cognitive functions: language, memory, attention, executive functions. The state of the art of cognitive rehabilitation in the main neurological diseases (stroke, dementia, multiple sclerosis). Computer assisted cognitive rehabilitation. The exam will make it possible to verify the achievement of the expected learning outcomes, through the critical evaluation of the knowledge acquired, in relation to the topics covered during the course.
