OVERVIEW

The course aims to explore the sports world practice and its interaction with society starting from the early 19th century, so as to grasp its educational function in parallel with the socio-cultural context in which it is inserted. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between sport and education, politics and the international scenario.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Knowledge outcome: to know the main features of the history of sport. 2. Competence outcome: to be able to identify the main historical and historiographical issues, and the use of the relative sources to investigate them. 3. Behavioral outcome: to be able to elaborate a critical reflection on the relationship among sport practice, socialization and citizenship.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student knows the historical progressions of sport by covering it in history from the 19th century to the present day. The student is also able to:

  • understand the main issues of the discipline and to follow the events and processes.
  • interpret critically the data and issues relating to the subject of study and reflection on the main topics, forming independent judgments on them.
  • communicate, with command of language, information, and issues related to the history of sport.
  • manage the main basic tools and the ability to use them so that you can deal autonomously further studies in the subject field and in the professional life.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of contemporary history (19th and 20th centuries).

TEACHING METHODS

The lectures will be mostly frontal, but there will be in-depth videos and moments of self-assessment of learning via wooclap.

The modality is face-to-face.

Slides and other material will be available in Aulaweb.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The sports world and its interaction with society in the contemporary age.

Specifically, the following topics will be addressed:

  1. Sport as a “total social fact”. The concept of game, physical education, sport.
  2. The nineteenth-century scenario: birth of sports pedagogy and physical education at school; birth of modern sport.
  3. Olympics until the First World War.
  4. Birth of sports governance (IOC and CONI).
  5. Sport and physical education in liberal Italy.
  6. The birth of sports journalism.
  7. Sport in totalitarianism: Stalin’s USSR.
  8. Sport in totalitarianism: fascist Italy.
  9. Sport in totalitarianism: Nazi Germany.
  10. Olympics and major sports events in the interwar period.
  11. Sport and physical education in republican Italy.
  12. Sport and the Cold War.
  13. Olympic boycotts.
  14. Sport today and sports governance.
  15. The Paralympic Games.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam (in Italian) consists of a written test lasting one hour.

The written test focuses on the topics covered during the lectures and in the materials and indicated in the “Syllabus/Content” section of this teaching sheet. The written test consists of three questions: to pass the exam, all answers must be sufficient. Each answer will be scored on a scale of 1 to 10. For sufficiency, all answers must reach the minimum score of 6/10. The final mark out of thirty is given by the sum of the partial marks of the three answers.

In case of certification of specific learning disability, disability or other special educational needs, the University legislation and regulations on disability and SLD are applied.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Written exam assessment: knowledge of historical events, of the main issues of the discipline and of the links among events are the main elements of evaluation. These are accompanied by the ability to synthesize information and clarity in the presentation of contents. Requests for additional questions to increase the mark will not be accepted. The written exam lasts 1 hour.
