OVERVIEW

The third year laboratory is shared between Prof. Bosisio and Prof. Cotton. Each student will have to attend 32 hours with one of the two lecturers. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main aim of the course is providing the students with further knowledge of the English language, starting from the level achieved in the 2nd year, in order to get closer to the B2 level target required by the Ministry of Education. Particular emphasis will be placed on those structures and skills that are most suitable to teaching in primary and nursery school.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The students are expected to achieve at least an intermediate knowledge of the target language (between B1 and B2 of the common European framework), always keeping in mind the aim of training them to teach English at primary and nursery school. For this reason, elements of language teaching methodology will also be introduced, integrating content and language learning, so as to maximize exposure time. Lessons and tasks will be aimed at enhancing all language skills, from listening to speaking to pronunciation, to reading and writing, to vocabulary and grammar, devoting particular attention to oral production.  

By the end of the course, the students should also:

1. Be able to understand how to apply the acquired knowledge and solve problems in relation to English language teaching in Primary and Nursery School.
2. Be able to employ the acquired knowledge both at the conceptual and the operational level, developing self-evaluation skills and flexibility; 
3. Develop adequate learning skills which will enable them to go on autonomously exploring the relevant topics and keep alive the acquired knowledge of the language, achieving in time the use of new structures and vocabulary items. 

PREREQUISITES

The students’ attendance of laboratory 2 must have been approved before they are admitted to laboratory 3.

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons will be IN ATTENDANCE. The main teaching methodology will be a laboratorial one, in which the students will have to actively contribute to the development of the lessons. Slides, video and audio materials and any other teaching tools that may be needed for practice, exemplification and simulation will be used. 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The students who take part in the laboratory will be divided into two groups, each of which will do a 32-hour course. Both groups will attend a B1+/B2 level laboratory, as a preparation for the Prova di Idoneità, which is set at the B2 level of the common European framework of reference for languages, and may already be taken at the end of the year.   Activities and discussions are aimed at enhancing the students' language skills, in order to provide them with a solid and concrete basis on which to build their teaching activity. All skills, from listening to writing, to reading to speaking will be analysed and practiced, without neglecting transversal competences of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Occasionally, elements of language teaching methodology will also be introduced, in a content and language integration modality, with particular reference to the primary and nursery school learning environments. The students will have to show active participation in the laboratory in order to obtain final approval. For this reason, continuous assessment of their learning process is provided for (see below).

Students must have their own copy of the Student's Book with them from the first lesson.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Although this is classified as a laboratory, attendance alone will not be enough to obtain approval. Active participation of the single students will be established by means of continuous assessment, so the latter are expected to follow the lessons actively, to comment, answer quetions, and carry out all tasks.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The students' progress in all skills, written and oral, will be ascertained through observation and the carrying out of interactive activities. All students will be expected to achieve at least an intermediate level of knowledge and use of the English language (between B1 and B2 of the European Framework). For those who are willing, such progress may be further established by means of a brief final test.

FURTHER INFORMATION

A student cannot attend the laboratory if s/he has not obtained approval of laboratory 2.

Attendance is strictly compulsory for at least 80% of the lessons. For each laboratory, attendance of the first class is obligatory. Furthermore, students cannot skip more than 2 consecutive lessons, in absence of serious motivations. 

Students with DSA, disability or other special educational needs are recommended to contact the disability board referent within the School or the Department to agree on teaching and exam methods which, according to the course’s objectives, take into account the modalities individual learning and provide suitable compensatory tools.
