OVERVIEW

The course in General Psychology is designed to provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of human behavior and key psychological functions (e.g., perception, emotion, motivation, memory, learning) through which individuals interact with the environment and process representations of themselves and their surroundings. There is a particular emphasis on applications within the contexts of motor sciences and sports.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Introduction to Fundamentals of General Psychology: provide an overview of major theories and concepts in general psychology, including cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes.
  • Applications in Motor Sciences: explore how psychological principles can be applied to enhance athletic and motor performance.
  • Research Methodologies: introduce students to the scientific method and research methodologies in psychology, aiming to develop critical skills in evaluating and applying scientific literature.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will have acquired an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental theories and concepts of General Psychology, will be able to use the skills acquired to enhance motor and sports performance, conduct bibliographic research using specific search engines, critically analyze the scientific literature in psychology, verify the reliability of sources, and practically apply the knowledge gained. Furthermore, they will develop an understanding of the rationale behind, and basic skills in the use of, tools for the assessment of psychological and cognitive functions (e.g., performance tests and self-report questionnaires) covered during the course.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching consists of 5 theoretical frontal lectures and the presentation of reference scientific papers, which will be discussed. During the lessons, group activities on the topics presented in class will be proposed.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

The General Psychology course program will focus primarily on these three aspects:

  1. Methodology and research techniques in psychology

  2. Main psychological functions through which humans interact with the environment and develop representations of the environment and themselves (e.g., attention, emotions, motivation, memory)

  3. Applied aspects related to motor sciences and sports performance"
