AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To provide a basic knowledge of physico-chemical principles and methods that can be used as tools to understand and investigate industrial chemical processes. Therefore, the application potential of the laws governing technical thermodynamics, fluodynamics and heat transmission will be presented. The fundamental principles of the kinetic theory of chemical reactions (homogeneous and heterogeneous) necessary for the sizing of chemical reactors will be provided. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The training objectives refer to the student's acquisition of mastery in formulating the combination of mass/energy conservation equations with thermodynamic/kinetic constitutive equations for the design and verification of the most important unit operations characterizing chemical transformation processes. At the end of the teaching, the student will be able to identify chemical-physical processes, use the relevant equations to describe them, discriminate the relevant aspects in terms of practical applications, evaluate the steady-state conditions of matter and energy exchange equipment, and finally design the equipment with a view to optimal management of operating conditions. TEACHING METHODS Oral lessons and exercises to the blackboard carried out by the teacher. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Mass , energy and entropy balance in open non-reactive systems. Characteristics, performance and efficiency of industrial equipment. Direct and inverse cycles. Heat pumps. Elements of psychrometry. Moisturing and drying processes. Basic equations of fluid dynamics. Fluid motion in ducts. Distributed and local hydraulic losses. Conductive, convective and radiative heat transfer. Thermal resistances in series and parallel. Heat exchangers. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY - M. J. Moran, H. N. Shapiro, Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics (Wiley, New York, 1992). - G. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD ANDREA REVERBERI Ricevimento: By appointment, made by phone (mob. phone: 329 2104532) or by e-mail (andrea.reverberi@unige.it) LESSONS LESSONS START Classes will be held in the period 30/09/2024 - 24/01/2025 https://servizionline.unige.it/unige/stampa_manifesto/MF/2024/8757.html Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The exam consists of an oral discussion. In case of emergency and only according to specific indications by the University of Genoa, the assessment method for the exam might be changed, including the possibility of an online procedure. ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral examination will cover the topics treated during the lectures and will aim to assess not only whether the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge, but whether she/he has acquired the ability to critically analyze the problems that will be posed during the examination. In particular, the ability to identify chemical-physical processes, to use the relevant equations to describe them, to discriminate the relevant aspects in terms of practical applications, to evaluate the regime conditions of matter and energy exchange equipment, and finally to design the equipment itself with a view to optimal management of operating conditions will be ascertained. The assessment standards concern the ability to stay on topic, the quality of expression, the logic pattern of the reasoning and the critical reasoning skills.
