OVERVIEW

The course is developed, for those taking the 9 CFU examination, in two modules of a total of 60 hours. The first module is dedicated to a broad overview of the main documentary typologies of the medieval millennium, their genesis, their trajectory, the different thematic and problematic approaches that historians of various disciplinary orientations have developed over time; it will be illustrated how to construct a thematic bibliography and how to access online resources. The second module consists of an in-depth study of the topics dealt with in the first, with classroom exercises on sources and bibliography and with proposals for different filing methods.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course "Sources and methods of medieval history" aims at providing knowledge of the main types of medieval documents, their uses and the problems in tackling such documentation; plus acquiring the ability to navigate through bibliographic resources, and to manage the data collected from documents.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

As part of the acquisition of basic knowledge of sources and methods for medieval history, the course aims to orient the student towards understanding the evolution of medieval sources, with particular reference to the documentary production of the 12th-15th centuries in the Italian context. At the end of the course the student will be able to recognise the main documentary typologies and the interpretations and uses that have been made of them over time; he/she will acquire both the ability to exploit the potential of the different documentary typologies that will be progressively discussed and an awareness of the problems in dealing with the sources of the medieval period. At the end of the course, students will also be able to autonomously construct a thematic bibliography and draw up files that can facilitate the analysis of different documentary typologies.
