CODE 80503 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 2 cfu anno 2 CHIMICA INDUSTRIALE 9020 (LM-71) - GENOVA LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The teaching allows the student to acquire the ECTS related to other training activities, which correspond to the test of seminar activity for the master’s degree course in Industrial Chemistry. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The student will prepare a written report and a seminar on the scientific background relating to the subject of the degree thesis and on the developments they intend to pursue. This activity will allow the student to acquire skills in critical analysis and synthesis of scientific literature as well as the ability to write a paper that illustrates what has been analyzed in a synthetic and clear way. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Goal of the exam is to verify that the student has achieved an adequate level of understanding and mastery of the issues related to his/her thesis. The student’s capabilities to present scientific topics by expressing himself/herself clearly and correctly in both written and oral form will also be assessed. During the exam, the student must demonstrate that he/she is able to: • illustrate the state of the art of the topic in a concise, but exhaustive, written report; • select and present properly a bibliography suitable for the description of the state of the art; • effectively describe the program, the work methodology and the characterization techniques used during the thesis experimental activity; • summarize orally the topic of the written report, making use of an electronic support. PREREQUISITES None. TEACHING METHODS The CdS uploaded a detailed regulation of the test of seminar activity at the link: https://chimica.unige.it/node/408 The written report must be sent to the members of the Exam Commission at least 7 days before the date agreed for the oral presentation. The thesis supervisor, the possible second supervisor and the first co-supervisor can partecipate in the organization of the written report and oral presentation. However, they must not intervene directly in the drafting of both report and exposition nor correct them. The student who has acquired ECTS abroad can, by his/her free choice, request to be exempted from the oral presentation and prepare only the written report, while accepting the different modalities of ECTS evaluation as explained below. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The exam consists in preparing a written report and an oral presentation on the scientific premises of the topic chosen for the thesis and on the developments expected during the experimental activity. The written report, no more than 30 pages long, must contain: 1) a description of the state of the art of the chosen topic; 2) the work program scheduled for the thesis; 3) the working methodology and equipment that will be used during the experimental activity; 4) an adequate bibliography reported in an appropriate and coherent format. Results of the experimental activity must not be added in the report. The oral presentation consists of a presentation of the written report contents by means of an electronic support. The presentation (in Italian or English at the student’s choice) lasts a maximum of 30 minutes, discussion included. The presentation must be clear and understandable even for non-professionals or students of level comparable to that of the candidate. Format, organization and graphics of the presentation must be functional to the information to be transmitted. Based on the items described, the teaching contributes to the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals of the ONU 2030 Agenda: Goal 4. Quality Education, Goal 5. Gender Equality. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY There are not recommended texts, as they are closely related to the topic chosen for the experimental thesis. Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Except cases handled by the CCS, the student must submit the written report to the Exam Commission at least 45 days before the graduation exam. No official dates are scheduled during the calendar year, so the exam date must be agreed from time to time with the Exam Committee. The Exam Committee is variable and made up of at least two teachers designated by the CCS. The supervisor, any additional supervisor and the first co-supervisor (chosen by the student) cannot be part of the Exam Committee. The exam consists of an oral presentation lasting up to 30 minutes, followed by the discussion of the written report. At the end of the exam, the Exam Commission will report a suitability judgment if adequate exposition clarity and sufficient in-depth analysis of the presented topics are assessed. Furthermore, they will express an evaluation giving a score from 0 to 1, also in fractional terms. The score will contribute to the definition of the degree mark as it will be added to the non-rounded weighted average of the exams. The student who has acquired ECTS abroad and, by his/her free choice, decides to be exempted from the oral presentation, will have recognized the 2 ECTS of the seminar activity with an evaluation score of 0. The student who has acquired ECTS abroad and, by his/her free choice, decides to attend the oral presentation, will have recognized the 2 ECTS of the seminar activity with an evaluation score from 0 to 1, also in fractional terms, based on the Commission's assessment. For students with valid certification of physical or learning disabilities, the examination methods refer to the specific regulations of the University of Genova (https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa). ASSESSMENT METHODS The purpose of the test is to verify the student's acquired ability to know, understand, illustrate and critically discuss the issues related to the experimental thesis. The criteria followed by the Exam Commission for the evaluation are listed below. For the written report: clarity of contents and ability to synthesize, lexical, syntactic and grammatical correctness, care in the text format, care in the selection of bibliography.
