OVERVIEW

Organic Synthesis (SINTORG, code 80285) is worth 6 credits and takes place in the second semester, 1st year of SC. Classes are held in English on demand, otherwise in Italian.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To acquire knowledge of manipulation and protection methods of functional groups, of the use of soluble and insoluble polymers and of their application in synthesis of polyfunctionalized molecules, of the use of databases for retrieval of scientific information.

Remember the reactivity of the main functional groups seen in previous courses
Understand the concepts underlying the formation of C-C bonds through electrophilic-nucleophilic coupling
Apply these concepts to the synthesis of complex molecules, through the processing of function and the use of protecting groups
Critically analyze examples taken from the literature
Evaluate different synthetic routes that lead to the same target, identifying the most efficient ones
Create new synthetic ways

TEACHING METHODS

Traditional, plus computer classroom activities for retrieval of bibliographic information, quiz and analysis of research articles

The course (6 CFU) consists of 48 lesson hours, divided into:

traditional lectures: 40 hours

interactive lessons: 8 hours (bibliographic search, group works)

carbanion chemistry and formation of carbon-carbon bonds
transformation of functional groups: oxidations, reductions, activations
Protection of functional groups
oligosaccharide synthesis: general aspects  and applications
Solid phase synthesis: general aspects and applications
Use of Reaxys and other databases in the search for scientific information

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination. Each student will receive, at the end of the lessons, the structure of an organic molecule on which the first part of the exam will be based. The student will have to perform a bibliographic research to find the synthesic pathways of that molecule, reportred in the relevant literature. The results of this research will be illustrated during the oral examination, where the discussion on the various synthetic steps will be deepened and where these could be the starting point for further questions. The exam will last at least 30 minutes and will always be conducted by two tenured teachers (or in limited cases, by a tenured professor and an assignee with at least 5 years of postgraduate research experience).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

With the methods described in the previous point, the commission will be able to verify with high accuracy the student's ability to independently perform a bibliographic research in the area of organic synthesis, as well as critically analyze the results obtained. Also the ability of the student to make rational connections between what is generally seen during the theoretical lessons and what is seen in practical applications, i.e., in the synthetic approaches reported in the relevant literature, will be evaluated. The achievement of the educational objectives is considered such when the student will be able to make such connections and will therefore be able to critically analyze a synthesic process in several steps. When these objectives are not achieved, the student is invited to deepen the study and to make use of further explanations by the professor.
