AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aim of the course is to provide the students with basic knowledge of physical structure, operating principles and electrical models of the most important electrical machines  in steady state conditions from the electrical and/or mechanical point of view. The goal of the course is to improve the skill of the students in harmonizing the knowledge get in previous years as far as mathematics, physics and electrotechnics are concerned, and the one dealing with electrical machines theory, in order to be able to model those macro-components to forecast their performances in civil and industrial applications.

Note. The information in this section is less detailed respect to the Italian version because lectures are provided in Italian only and the same constraint applies for exams as well.

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom lectures and numerical exercises resolution, laboratory experiences.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Overview on electrical machines type and use.

Single phase and three phase transformers: operating principles, electrical models, laboratory test, applications.

Induction motors: operating principles, electrical models and torque vs. speed mechanical performance, laboratory test, applications.

Synchronous machines: operating principles, electrical models, wound and permanent magnet rotor, applications.

DC motors: operating principles, electrical models and torque vs. speed mechanical performance, applications.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written and oral exams.

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the School's disability liaison.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Aim of written and oral exams is to evaluate if the candidate has understood the operating principles of the electrical machines and is able to solve simple numerical examples. During oral exam candidate ability in clearly describing concepts and using a correct and suitable technical wording will be evaluated as well.
