AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the module is to introduce and deepen techniques and methods of Mathematical Physics for the construction of mathematical models and the solution of mechanical problems in Naval Engineering.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquisition of specific skills regarding the following aspects:

  1. constraints, and their representation;
  2. systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom: analytic representation of admissible configurations and  kinetic states;
  3. dynamics and statics of systems subject to ideal constraints;
  4. equilibrium stability and small oscillations;
  5. hydrostatic and hydrodynamic effects on rigid bodies moving in a surrounding fluid.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lectures.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. Geometry of constrained systems. Positional and kinetic constraints; holonomic systems. Configuration space-time, velocity space. Constitutive characterization of the reactive forces. Ideal constraints.
  2. Lagrange equations. Cauchy problem and mechanical determinism. Ordinary and generalized potentials. First integrals. Relative Mechanics, apparent forces. Generalized velocities.
  3. Equilibrium of holonomic systems. Stability and pseudo-stability. Small oscillations
  4. Immersed rigid body dynamics. Tait-Bryan angles, Kirchhoff equations. Pseudo-stability of the equilibrium configuration and small motions of a floating body in calm water. Hydrodynamic pressure; added mass coefficients.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

  1. Lecture notes by the teacher;
  2. Goldstein H., Pool C., Safko J. "Meccanica Classica". Zanichelli (2005);
  3. Lewandowski E.M. “The dynamics of marine craft”;
  4. Newman J.N. ”Marine hydrodynamics”

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Verification of learning of the theory, and of the ability to apply it to concrete situations, through the discussion of specific topics developed in class. The solution of numerical exercises is not required.
