CODE 60190 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 INGEGNERIA NAVALE 8738 (LM-34) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/01 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course provides knowledge on a systemic perspective allowing the successful decision making process necessary during the ship design procedure of ships. This is key especially characterized by high value and high technology density. The ship design process is analysed in the life-cycle perspective and circular economy domain to frame the shipbuilding activity and the shipping in general inthe context of sustainable development. The main interaction among different specialistic aspects characterizing the ship design are analyzed and discussed along the linear iterative path of the design spiral. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To carry out the synthesis among the mail technical subjects characterizing the ship design AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES develop the adequate requirements analysis for the selection of the appropriate solution acquire the competences to balance the several needs, possibly conflicting, arising during the ship design compare different possible solutions with reference to suitable criteria To adapt the communication skills to the context, to use sources and support of any nature, to develop a critical thinking, to develop skills to use elaborate and evaluate information, to have argumentative skills To be aware about personal knowledge level, to understand further competence needs, to be able to identify and pursue further learning aims TEACHING METHODS lectures in classroom; open discussion on selected topics; students will be involved in an agile discussions about fundamental topics (relevant to the course) ; along discussions they will be put in the conditions to recall and elaborate the knowledge and skills they acquired in the previous years during the course a group activity will be carried out about a selected topic (relevant to the course). the work will be presented and dicussed by the groups. Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the professor of the course and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the Polytechnic School - Engineering's disability liaison. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The shipping industry and the shipping market The ship life cycle Systems engineering for the design process of complex ships The rule makning environment Design Spiral Ship typologies Ship geometry features Influence of ship main scantlings and their ratio Preliminary ship weight evaluation Preliminary stability assessment Ship energy systems selection (special focus on alternative fuels) Cost evaluation along the ship life cycle RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY "Ship Design - Methodologies for preliminary design" A. Schneekluth TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD PAOLA GUALENI Ricevimento: place: villa cambiaso - Prof. Gualeni and Prof. Piaggio office time: students are invited to send an email or to pop up in office in order to agree about the time In case students are not able to reach villa cambiaso, a remote meeting can be arranged on TEAMS LESSONS LESSONS START https://corsi.unige.it/8738/p/studenti-orario Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Oral test: two open questions about topics developed and discussed in classroom during the semester. ASSESSMENT METHODS Questions are aimed to assess the capability of the students to discuss about theorethical and practical aspects of ship design. Specific attention will be given to the capability of indicating the basic assuptions together with the input data, the target of the procedure and its rational developement. The discussion will also be based on practical evaluations about real ships data found on selected publications.
