CODE 60389 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 INGEGNERIA NAVALE 8738 (LM-34) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/01 LANGUAGE Italian (English on demand) TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course deals with the problem of ship controllability. The different approaches for the assessment of ship manoeuvrability characteristics will be covered, introducing the basic equation of motion and considering experimental and numerical approaches. Current IMO requirements will be presented, together with the standard manoeuvres adopted for the assessment of ship manoeuvrability. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Definition of the basic motion equations and of the hydrodynamic characteristics which affect the ship behaviour in terms of manoeuvrability. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course the student will be able to: - Understand the issues related to ship manoeuvrability (manoeuvrability prediction, design of control means), knowing the effects of the different elements (hull, appendages, propulsion systems, control means, mutual interactions); - Apply the notions described above for the design of the ship from the point of view of maneouvrability - Understand manoeuvring simulators developed in Matlab/Simulink environment - Develop simplified parts of manoeuvring simulators in Matlab / Simulink environment PREREQUISITES The student is expected to have already acquired the fundamentals of naval architecture. TEACHING METHODS Lessons covering theory and classwork. During classwork a simplified manoeuvrability simulator will be developed (in Excel and successively in Simulink) Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the professor of the course and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the Polytechnic School - Engineering's disability liaison. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Governing equations Straight line / Directional / Positional stability Manoeuvring characteristics and standard manoeuvres Existing rules IMO (requirements, Pilot card, Wheelhouse poster, Manoeuvring booklet) NATO (ANEP – STANAG) - RINAMIL Model tests Free running model tests Captive model tests Non linear equations SNAME Model MMG Model Regressions Steering devices Rudder (open water) Rudder (interaction effects) Rudder design Alternative (active) steering devices (Azipod, WJ, etc) Appendages effects Short introduction to system Identification Speed variation Slow speed manoeuvrability Manoeuvrability in shallow and restricted waters Short introduction to direct numerical calculations (CFD) The course contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the UN 2030 Agenda ( Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Notes of the lecturer Principles of Naval Architecture (PNA) Vol.3 TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD MICHELE VIVIANI Ricevimento: Students are recieved on appointment, contacting via e-mail (michele.viviani@unige.it), via Teams or phone (010 3532547) LESSONS LESSONS START https://corsi.unige.it/8738/p/studenti-orario Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The student will be evaluated by means of an oral examination on all the course program. There are three exams in summer (June, July, September) and two in winter (January and February), plus some additional exams during year to be agreed with the professor. The exam will regard coursework had during the lectures and theory (usually two questions). Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the professor of the course and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the Polytechnic School - Engineering's disability liaison. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam is carried out by means of an oral interview. The first part consists in the verification of the results of the coursework carried out during the year, in order to verify the understanding of the methods to develop a manoeuvrability simulator. Subsequently the exam is made up of two/three specific questions to verify the understanding of the issues related to the ship manoeuvrability and the effects of the various elements involved, with application of these topics to the ship design from the manoeuvrability point of view. During the exam, attention will also be given to the communication skills in order to ensure full acquisition of the correct vocabulary. FURTHER INFORMATION The students have to sign up for the exams via the online website. Agenda 2030 - Sustainable Development Goals Life below water
