CODE 94657 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 5 cfu anno 2 ENGINEERING FOR NATURAL RISK MANAGEMENT 10553 (LM-26) - SAVONA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ICAR/02 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION SAVONA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: RISK IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course will be developed on three main areas: Hydraulic Maritime and Coastal Engineering, Marine Pollution and Marine ecosystem monitoring. In particular, they will address the following themes:prediction wave, action on the coasts, numerical models of simulation and forecasting, numerical models for the wave action on the morphology of the coast, wave river mouths interaction, analysis of the formation of coastal currents and their action on the coasts. The pollutant transport phenomena, numerical models for the transport of passive and chemically active substances in the coastal environment. The effects on the ecosystem as a result of input of pollutants, the creation of works, fluvial-marine system interactions, modeling and simulation of the dynamics of these ecosystems, interaction between coastal and ecosystem dynamics currents. The impact of Climate Change will be analyzed in the course focusing on the phenomenon of Sea Level Rise (SLR) correaltedd to the SDGs 13 of Agenda 2030. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The student at the end of the course will be able to analyze the sea wave data and using a Geographical Information System (QGIS or other cartography information system) to define the principal physical phenomes that can be involved in the propagation of sea state from deep water to shallow water. The principal rules and models to describe these phenomes are described in detail. The arguments analyzed are strictly correlated to the Sustainable Developments Goals of Agenda 2030 TEACHING METHODS The lesson will be done using power point presentations. The material showed during each lesson will be present also in “AulaWEB “of the course, During the course different moments will be introduced to evaluate the comprehension using Wooclap test or similar procedure. It is requested to produce some technical relations that will be discussed in the classroom to increase the communication and critical skills of the students. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Sea waves Mechanics of wave motions. Wave and water level prediction. Effect of sea waves along the shoreline, numerical model to forecast the action of sea wave motion along the shoreline. Interaction of river mouths and the morphology of the shoreline. The numerical model to evaluate the shoreline currents and their effects on the shoreline and its morphology. Sea pollution Numerical and physical model to evaluate the dispersion of pollution on the surface and in the sea, with particular attention to the pollution from negative components for the coastal environment (plants and animals’ life in the sea). Monitoring of maritime ecosystem Model to evaluate the spread of pollution from natural and human stress on the sea. Model to analyze the effects on short and long time of the artificial structures on the maritime ecosystem. The international laws on maritime area The maritime laws in Europe and in United States will be analysed to evaluate the difference and the limits. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Coastal Engineering Manual USArmy Shoreline Management Guidelines, 2017 PAINC report 121, 2014 For the students with learnig disorders (in italian DSA) it is possible to utilize specific modalities and supports that will be defined case-by-case in agreement with the delegate of the enginnering courses in the Committe for the Inclusion of Students with disabilites. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD ANGELA CELESTE TARAMASSO Ricevimento: The students can send a mail to myself to fix the appointment or to ask more information or explanation on the theme discussed during the lesson.
