OVERVIEW

The module deals with antennas, fundamental components in different electronic systems commonly used in today's information society. In particular, the course provides skills both in reference to basic radianting structures and to the most recent advanced and intelligent antenna systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module provides knowledge and skills related to antennas, with reference to both their working principles and their use in various application areas in the industrial, civil, and biomedical fields.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the module is to provide knowledge and skills related to antennas, with reference to both their operating principles and their use in different applicative areas. In particular, students will acquire knowledge and skills related to the following main topics: Fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation and antenna parameters; Linear antennas, aperture antennas, reflector antennas, printed antennas; Arrays of antennas and their application for the realization of MIMO systems, intelligent and reconfigurable antennas. At the end of the module students will be able to understand and analyze the problems related to the study and design of antennas, and will be able to apply these skills in different applicative areas.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of electromagnetic fields.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes frontal lessons in the classroom, in which both the theoretical aspects related to the operating principles of the antennas and the applicative ones related to their use in different contexts will be addressed, also through exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Electromagnetic radiation. Antenna radiation parameters. Linear antennas (dipoles, monopoles, loops ...). Aperture antennas (open waveguides, Horn, ...). Reflector antennas (parabolic dish, ...). Printed antennas (patch antennas, ...). Antenna arrays (linear and planar antennas, smart and reconfigurable antennas). Link between antennas.

This course contributes to the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda: Objectives no. 8 and 9.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral discussion may cover the entire course program and it will be aimed at assessing the skills acquired by the students on antennas, with reference to both their operating principles and their use in different fields. The evaluation of the exam will be based on the quality of the presentation, the reasoning ability and the level of knowledge acquired by the students.
