OVERVIEW

The teaching provides the fundamentals related to the general sizing of outdoor and indoor lighting systems. Particular attention is paid to saving energy, increasing road safety, creating the most comfortable working or leisure environments possible, and creating conditions that allow the best enjoyment of artworks while ensuring their best preservation using automation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Teaching explores smart lighting ("smart lighting") type solutions in which technical solutions for light play a significant role in managing multiple services that go beyond the outdoor and indoor environment lighting itself.

Understand the basic principles of lighting: learn the fundamental concepts of lighting, including the properties of light, colour temperature, intensity, direction, and the interaction between light and surfaces.
Familiarize yourself with lighting equipment: gain knowledge about various lighting fixtures, bulbs, lamps, and accessories commonly used in lighting setups, including their functions, characteristics, and applications.
Understand lighting for different environments: study the considerations and approaches for lighting different environments such as indoor spaces, outdoor locations, photography studios, theatres, and architectural spaces. Learn how to adapt lighting techniques and equipment to suit specific contexts.
Study lighting safety and energy efficiency: study emergency lighting regulations and learn about energy-efficient lighting solutions, such as LED technology, and understand how to optimize lighting settings to reduce energy consumption.
Understand the importance of daylight: learn about the benefits of natural light in indoor spaces, including its positive impact on human health, well-being, productivity and energy efficiency.
Gain practical experience: apply theoretical knowledge by carrying out practical exercises and projects.
Master lighting control: acquire skills in manipulating lighting variables such as intensity, direction, colour and shadows. Understand the use of lighting control devices to achieve desired lighting effects and adjust the mood or atmosphere of a scene.
Explore lighting design principles: learn about the principles of lighting design, including balance, contrast, focus, and composition. Understand how to create visually pleasing lighting arrangements that enhance the subject, emphasize key elements, and create a sense of depth and dimension.
Study lighting safety and energy efficiency: familiarize with safety guidelines, electrical codes, and best practices for handling lighting equipment. Learn about energy-efficient lighting solutions, such as LED technology, and understand how to optimize lighting setups for reduced energy consumption.
Understand the importance of daylight: learn about the benefits of natural daylight in indoor spaces, including its positive impact on human health, well-being, productivity, and energy efficiency
Gain hands-on experience: apply theoretical knowledge by engaging in practical exercises and projects.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching presents theoretical lectures and exercises with application examples of indoor and outdoor lighting such as single rooms, multi-story buildings, pathways, parking lots and roads using real lighting fixtures.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Smart City: definition and forms according to which a city can become smart. Innovation in lighting: new technologies and smart integration with other service networks in the Smart City
Photometry: Description of the phenomenon of human vision: description of phenomena related to light and its perception. Definitions of the fundamental photometric and radiometric quantities and the principles that link them and describe their behavior. Typical examples of such quantities.
Light and matter: Interaction with matter. Reflection coefficient and luminance coefficient.
Colorimetry: Methods of color classification according to color spaces.
Instrumentation: Description of instrumentation for measuring photometric, radiometric and colorimetric quantities.
Light sources: Illustration of the main types and current technologies, luminous and electrical characteristics. Presentation of the fundamental properties of luminaires: efficiency, light emission characteristics, cumulative emission. Description of methodologies, instrumentation, measurement systems and regulatory requirements related to measurements on light sources (lamps and luminaires).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Grading:
Exercises to be developed individually during the course (25%);
Research to be done individually or in pairs on a topic indicated in the course (25%);
Interior lighting project (25%);
Outdoor lighting project (25%).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The activities carried out by students during the course make it possible to establish the effective acquisition of knowledge and to assess the ability to apply knowledge in practical situations that may occur in work practice.
