To start the training path of the future doctor with full exposure to all the intercultural and interdisciplinary dimension of the profession, through a survey of the evolution of medical thought and of the challenging great ethical issues of today’s world.
To identify medicine as space and perspective for human care, in a comprehensive view embracing the complexity of humans as subjects / objects of care, the interplay of health and disease, the wealth of care practices.
To promote awareness of the relevance of Medical Humanities in the development of the medical training curriculum.
The course includes numerous, supposedly separate topics in order to represent the richness and variety of medicine, with a view to highlight its manifold anthropological, cultural and ethical issues at play.
The course includes lectures, seminars, video projections and small group classroom activities.
Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.
Classroom work will include seminars involving contributions of scholars with a varied cultural background, in the fields of biology and human sciences. In particular, topics will touch on the epistemology of medicine, history of medical thought, anthropology of health, and ethics of care, organized in the following sessions:

In addition, practical information will be provided on the organization of the medical curriculum and on student’s access to the main utilities available online from the UNIGE site.
