Inorganic and General Chemistry course is a pivotal class for the education and training of Pharmacists as it provides the knowledge required for the following chemistry classes. This class allows to acquire the scientific language and the skills required for the professional practice.
The fundamentals of chemistry will be aquired (the matter and its atomic structure, chemical bonds, inorganic compounds, nomenclature, states of matter, principles of thermodynamics, solutions, chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, the main chemical properties of the most important elements and inorganic compounds).
The overall expected learning outcomes is the acquisition of the chemistry knowledge required for the next classes.
The course promotes the following soft skills:
- alfabetica funzionale, entry level: ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, adaptation of one's communication to the context, use of sources and aids of various kinds.
- imparare ad imparare, entry level: awareness of one's preferred learning strategies, organization and assessment of personal learning according to what has been understood and learned.
The class includes 64 hours of interactive frontal teaching, during which the teacher deals with the whole program, carries out exercises, and involves the students with instant polling questions on the topics covered or under explaination. During the lessons, real cases/problems will be proposed, demonstrating the pervasiveness of chemistry in everyday life. General debriefing will follow.
Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department ( Prof. Luca Raiteri, Luca.Raiteri@unige.it ) before class begins, in order to liaise and arrange the specific learning methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. VERY IMPORTANT: any request for compensatory tools and adaptations in the exam MUST be done within 10 working days before the date of the exam according to the instructions that can be found at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni

The exam consists of two compulsory parts: a written test followed by an oral test.
The written test consists in:
- a multiple choice test (30 questions, including numerical problems and chemical reactions).
The students can view their test and discuss the outcome it with the lecturer.
The minimum score to be admitted to the oral exam is 18/30.
The oral exam commission is composed by two members of the academic staff. It covers the whole program, and can rest for max 30 minutes. During the class, two ongoing tests will be proposed.
The exam aims to assess:
- the knowledge of the discipline (test)
- the acquisition of a correct scientific language (oral exam);
- general and specific problem-solving skills (test and oral exam).
