This course aims at providing a comprehensive overview on the main categories of Fluid Machines and on their operating principles.
This course aims at providing the fundamentals of fluid dynamics applied to fluid machines, in order to allow understanding the main working principles. More in detail, once recalled the essential principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, the course will deal with hydraulic turbines, as well as steam and gas turbines, volumetric and centrifugal pumps, volumetric and dynamic compressors.
This course aims at providing the fundamental working principles about fluid machinery, for both Power-producing and Power-adsorbing machines and for compressible and non-compressible fluids. Moreover, skills about the selection criteria, based on usage and on operative range, will be developed.
Basic knowledge in thermodynamics fluid mechanics.
The educational activities are organized into 52 hours of theoretical classes. Slides will be used to describe the machine operative schemes as well as the ones related to the power plants. During the classes exercises will be done.
Primary energy source classifications. National energy requirement.
Energy equations, Eulero equation, Hugoniot equation and elements about the nozzle behavior. Expansion and compression processes. Velocity triangles in axial and radial flows. Efficiency and stage reaction definitions..
Natural resource management, different kind of hydraulic power plants. Similarity theory applied to hydraulic turbines. Pelton, Francis e Kaplan turbines.
Effects of the stage reaction on velocity triangles and stage characteristics. Comparison between the different stage reaction architectures. Single and multiple stages machines.
Aspects of the different kind of pumps. Centrifugal pumps. Characteristic curves. Pump selection. Stability. Matching and flow rate control.

The exam is basically made through oral discussion of the course topics. Three official examination dates are present during the summer session (June, July and September) and two during winter session (January and February).
Examination is done on a graded scale (1-30) based on oral discussion of the course topics. Two questions are typically done.
