OVERVIEW

The course introduces the descriptive models of electronic devices and their use in analog circuits, also providing various application examples.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of the fundamental operation of the main electronic components (diodes, transistors and operational amplifiers) and their use, providing analytical methodologies and basic tools for the study and design of simple analog electronic circuits.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Acquire basic methods and tools to analyze simple analog circuits using discrete components.
  • Acquire methodologies for the study and design of linear and nonlinear circuits based on integrated operational amplifiers.

Learning outcomes

  • Understanding the functioning of the main electronic components (diodes, bipolar transistors, FET transistors, operational amplifiers), and their characteristics and limitations in the realization of discrete component electronic circuits and simple electronic systems.
  • Ability to analyze the operation of electronic circuits of reduced complexity and to study their behavior also by using a circuit simulator, evaluating their operation and limitations.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lessons, alternating theory subjects and explained exercises, similar to those students will have to solve during the exam.During the lectures, the PSPICE circuit simulator will sometimes be used in order to compare the results obtained from numerical analysis with those deriving from analytical methods in order to be able to evaluate the effects of the approximations used in the models.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. Fundamentals of electronic circuits: bias and operating point.
  2. Diodes models and circuits
  3. Electronc circuits using diodes: rectifiers, clippers, voltage regulators.
  4. Use of the PSPICE simulator for circuit analysis
  5. Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJTs) and MOS Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) models for large-signal and small-signal applications
  6. Basic amplifier configurations using BJT and MOSFET transistors
  7. Notes on the use of transistors for digital applications.
  8. Operational Amplifiers: characteristics, parameters and use of feedback (negative and positive)
  9. Use of operational amplifiers for linear and non-linear applications.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consits of a written test, followed by a subsequent oral exam that may be optional for students who have obtained at least the sufficiency in the written exam.

Students with SLD, with disabilities, or with other regularly certified special educational needs will agree with the teacher on the exam method and the compensatory instruments, by contacting the instructor at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of the additional time required by law.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student's ability to solve simple electronic circuits and related problems will be evaluated, as well as the clarity of the exposure, the capacity of critical analysis and the mastery of the issues related to electronic devices.
