AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will learn the features and the purpose of the main components of mechanical systems and transmissions. He will learn to analyse the kinematic, static and dynamic behaviour of simple systems with rigid and flexible bodies in presence of constraints, and of power transmissions.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at providing the theoretical and applicative knowledge about the main components of of mechanical systems.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • select transmission components and mechanisms on the basis of the considered application
  • select these components starting from given requirements
  • select typology and perform geometrical synthesis of articulated systems and cams
  • evaluate the vibrational behaviour of simple mechanical systems

TEACHING METHODS

The course is organised with theoretical lessons and presentations of exercise and case studies.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Mechanics of kinematic pairs: rolling and sliding bearings; basics of hydrodynamic and hydrostatic bearings. Gear wheels: definitions, geometry; modular gears; coupling and force transmission; helical gears; gears for transmission between nonparallel axes. Power transmissions: ordinary and epicyclical gears; gear efficiency. Transmissions with chains and belts. Rope transmissions. Variators, joints, clutches, brakes. Mechanisms for general motion: motion laws, articulated systems, cams, other mechanisms. Introduction to fluid transmissions. Mechanical vibrations; natural vibrations; structural properties; forced vibrations; frequency response; force transmission. Basics of rotor dynamics; static and dynamic imbalance.

Oral exam with discussion of the topics.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam comprises two questions abut the topics of the course. During the exam, the theoretical aspects and the application to a numerical example will be discussed, in order to assess the capability of the student of performing calculations about mechanical components. Behind the correctness of the solution, also the quality of the presentation, the usage of the correct terminology and the capacity of critical analysis will be assessed.
