OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide students of the knowledge and understanding of the criteria of structural design for static strength

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students of the knowledge and understanding of the criteria of structural design for static strength

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with methodologies and analytical tools for the study of the state of tension / deformation in solids and structures for the purpose of evaluating resistance in the static field, with particular reference to the mechanical elements attributable to the "beam".

Attendance to lectures and guided exercises and individual study will allow the student to:

  • learn the general aspects of Structural Mechanics, in the meaning of an analytical study of the rigid and deformable body
  • learn computation methods with the aim of studying solid mechanics models of increasing complexity,
  • achieve an excellent ability to analyze both the static equilibrium of rigid and deformable bodies and the relative state of tension / deformation, with particular reference to models of traviform solids, when subjected to static load conditions variously combined
  • acquire the ability to extend the principles learned to structures composed of various beams
  • master the use of the mechanical characteristics of the materials most used in the mechanical and structural fields with static loadsn

TEACHING METHODS

The lectures, together with the development of numerous exercises, also in the form of guided exercises, provide the student with a logical and orderly method to follow in the applications of the theory. All the examples / exercises solved use this methodology in order to favor a good assimilation of the theoretical principles, proceeding step by step from the simple example to the more complex and articulated one. The student also achieves a good experience in solving various problems. Starting from the fundamental concepts of stress and strain, the student are encouraged to analyze the experimental behavior of materials, with special reference to materials typically used in engineering, by using photos, experimental samples, videos.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written tests, two hours long, divided into two parts.

The first part requires to solve two exercices, of different topics, difficulties and weight.

The second part includes two questions related to the theoretical topics developed in the lectures.

During the tests only white paper, pens/pensils, rulers, and a calculator. Cellular phones, tablet, or laptops are not allowed.

Students with SLD, with disabilities, or with other regularly certified special educational needs will agree with the teacher on the exam method and the compensatory instruments, by contacting the instructor at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of the additional time required by law.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The first part of the test will assess the student's ability to:

  • correctly calculate the area properties of proposed figures, often schematic pattern of real elements
  • analyze the appropriate constraints and their effectiveness
  • analyze the loads acting on the structure
  • draw the characteristics of stress in specific sections
  • identify the most stressed areas
  • dimension the critical areas by choosing the right material

The secon part of the exam will focus on the topics faced during the lectures and aims to assess to which extent the student:

  • has assimilated an adequate level of knowledge about structural mechanics
  • has acquired the ability to logically face problems that will be posed during the test
  • can illustrate theories and solve problems
  • expresses his thinking clearly
  • uses appropriate terminology
  • uses a methodological approach oriented to analyze the experimental behavior of materials, with special reference to materials typically used in engineering
